Pakistani Youths Builds Helicopter: Bright Future For Automotive Industry
Pakistan has no dearth of talent. We wrote before about a man from Karachi who is blind but working as a mechanic, about a girl who transformed a vespa into a carand about students from an engineering university who made a racing car but the feat achieved by two brothers from a suburb of Peshawar has surpassed all these events. These two brother have built a light helicopter. This is the first time in the history of Pakistan that a private entity has successfully built an airborne vehicle.
[h=2]Material And Manpower Cost[/h]
The project cost more than PKR 35 lacs and both the brothers as well as other people from the family have been working on the project for more than six years. The material cost is estimated to be about 6 lacs per year but lets think about the manpower cost and the opportunity cost for a second. At least 2 people working on the project full time results in a lot of manhours and these people could have used their energies to benefit financially from some other endeavour but instead they consecrated their time and effort in this direction in order to get this vehicle off the ground.
[h=2]Opportunity Cost[/h]
Lets think about the opportunity cost as well. Lets define the opportunity cost first. Lets say a farmer decided to grow potatoes. His opportunity cost is the alternative crop that might have been grown instead (for example sugar cane). The opportunity cost is what a person sacrifices, when they choose one option over another. In this case these brother sacrificed the option to do a business or farming or taking an employment in order to work on this project. The opportunity cost hence is enormous but the rewards as well have been enormous. They have built the first ever indigenously made helicopter in Pakistan.
[h=2]Technical Details And Evolution[/h]
The flying machine in question was not always a helicopter. It did turn out to be a helicopter all right in the end but it had to go through different phases of mechanical evolution like any other invention. It started as a motorized glider. The idea of a motorized glider is not new. Usually a falaise or a hill is chosen and then the person using the glider jumps off this hill and instead of free-falling like a rock glides through the air.
[h=2]Motorized Gliding[/h]
The concept of motorized gliding is a little bit different. Instead of jumping off a tall building or a hill, a motorized glider works just as an aeroplane. It has a small propeller motor attached to be back which can be used to taxi on a runway. Once the vehicle is in the air, it glides instead of using fuel to fly. This helicopter was a motorized glider before it became a light helicopter.
[h=2]Wings To Rotors[/h]Once the flight using the wings was made, our inventor brother decided to replace the wings with rotors to make it a helicopter. Although the inventors claim that all the parts were acquired or purchased in Pakistan, they admit that the rotors were imported from Italy. Even then it is a big achievement to make a helicopter. To be fair, the helicopter is yet to make its first test flight because the newly arrived rotors have not yet been attached to the device.
This augurs very well for the Pakistani industry in general and for the automotiveand aerodynamic industries in particular because indigenous talent like this will put Pakistan on the way to development and to prosperity.
