Compliance report of Musharraf’s arrest warrants presented in court
Letters have been written to the British home ministry for Musharraf’s arrest, court told.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday produced before an anti-terrorism court a special compliance report regarding arrest warrant of former president Pervez Musharraf in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination case.

During the hearing of the case in Adiala Jail, FIA counsel Chaudhry Zulfiqar told the court that letters had been written to the British home ministry for the implementation of the arrests warrants issued against Musharraf.

He said that though there was not agreement of prisoners’ swap between Pakistan and UK, Musharraf should be arrested and be handed over to Pakistan under Article 4, sub-section 2 of the Extradition Act. He said that the British government had been told that it was an important case and Musharraf’s trial was necessary.

Zulfiqar said that Interpol would also be contacted soon to ensure the arrest of Pervez Musharraf.

Case hearing adjourned till end of FIA says no progress made; case hearing adjourned till end of April. .

A Special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to contact Interpol for the arrest of former president Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

The case hearing has been adjourned until the end of April.

During the hearing, the FIA submitted a report, stating it has contacted Britain regarding the arrest of Musharraf. The FIA said no progress has been made for the arrest of Musharraf, on which, the judge asked the agency to contact Interpol and present the accused on April 2.

The prosecution was to submit an application for declaring the former president a proclaimed offender, but the hearing was adjourned due to the absence of defence lawyers.

Pakistan had earlier sought the Commonwealths cooperation in extraditing former president Pervez Musharraf from Britain for his alleged involvement in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Dramatic revelations

Dramatic revelations

Our interior minister is given to making some rather startling revelations now and then. He has now stated that all persons suspected of being involved in the 2007 murder of Benazir Bhutto were under arrest and the investigation report into the case revealed who these assassins were and what their real motives were. There has been a hint of a possible attempt to destabilise the region or the country. It is difficult to say at this point what this is all about or what the connotations made by Mr Malik allude to. He has said the PPPs central executive committee will decide if the report is to be made public or not. Until now, the report has not been produced before the committee, leading to all kinds of questions being raised. We certainly hope the truth, and the whole truth, about one of the most sensational and tragic assassinations in our political history will come out. As citizens, we deserve to know what happened and why. Benazir was, after all, a leader not only of her own party but of people across the country. Many today continue to mourn her death and also the huge political vacuum it has left behind. More than three years after she was assassinated conjecture continues to surround the issue of what happened and why. There are many theories, and over time they have grown. It is time the truth came out.

We must then hope Mr Maliks words are a step in this direction. The clearing up of the mystery could help ease the sea of conspiracy we have seen swirl for far too long. The doubts and uncertainties have clouded the political atmosphere. We must hope the report, and all the revelations contained within it, will be put before the committee, so that we can know precisely what Mr Malik means and who the people are whom he says have been held in connection with the Benazir killing, thereby ending the sense of uncertainty that has followed it for so many long months.

KARACHI:
This is with reference to the recent report which said that Interior Minister Rehman Malik had claimed that the government had identified Benazir Bhuttos assassins. This remark by the minister reminded me of a joke about a villager whose donkey goes missing. In search for his animal, he enters the forest where a film unit is busy shooting a romantic scene. The hero of the movie holds the heroine in his arms and says: Darling! Your eyes are like the deep ocean and I can see the whole world in your eyes! Hearing this dialogue, the villager interrupts and asks the hero: Do you see my donkey in her eyes?
Will Rehman Malik please tell the world and the people of Pakistan in particular just who the assassins are whether they include a former army chief who also served as president?
