Mirza on 1st day of assuming sr. minister slot attacks press freedom

KARACHI: On the very first day of his assuming the charge of Sindh senior minister, Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Mirza has made a blatant attack on the freedom of press by stopping the Geo News team from coverage, as his guards on his directive snatched away the camera, mike, bullet-proof jackets, helmet and DVs.

Senior provincial minister, Zulfiqar Mirza got the Geo News team maltreated, abused, humiliated and insulted by his guards and himself here early this morning, when the Geo team was making a video of his VVIP convoy near Light House on M.A. Jinnah Road.

Zulfiqar Mirza moving with more than a dozen of mobile vehicles, his guards in uniform and plain clothes on his directive stopped Geo News from coverage on gun point, threatened to kill them and snatched away Geo News teams camera, mike, bullet-proof jackets, helmet and DVs.

Meanwhile, Zulfiqar Mirza himself joined in the melee used abusive and filthy languages (not printable) naming some of the senior journalists, anchor persons of different Tv programs, Jang Group and the media as a whole. After a while on his directive, the police tried to lift the News team into the mobile, while the sr. minister grabbing Geo News reporter Shoaib Burney and cameraman Zubairuddin by their identity cards hanging with their necks dragged it away.

The journalists have declared this shameful and shocking incident an attack on the freedom of press by the provincial sr. minister, Zulfiqar Mirza and have expressed their grief and anger.

Re: Mirza on 1st day of assuming sr. minister slot attacks press freedom

Kamran Khan (Jang Group) involved Pakistan Army in Drug Trade.
We never learn from history By Ardeshir Cowasjee dated 21 July 2002 Sunday 10 Jamadi-ul-Awwal 1423 http://www.dawn.com/weekly/cowas/20020721.htm

In September of 1994 Kamran Khan of The News and The Washington Post came calling. He told me how earlier that year he had asked for an appointment with the then leader of the opposition, Nawaz Sharif, to interview him on his relationship with the army and the security services whilst he was prime minister. He was asked to go to Lahore and meet the Mian. When on May 16 Kamran arrived at Nawaz's Model Town house, there was an army of men equipped with bulldozers demolishing the security fences and structures Nawaz had built on adjoining land, not his to build upon (akin to those built around Karachi's Bilawal House). The breakers had been on the job since dawn. Kamran found Nawaz angry but composed. He was amply plied and refreshed with 'badaam-doodh' and Nawaz, his information wizard Mushahid Hussain and he settled down to talk and continued to do so until late afternoon when Kamran left to fly back to Karachi. REFERENCE: We never learn from history By Ardeshir Cowasjee dated 21 July 2002 Sunday 10 Jamadi-ul-Awwal 1423 http://www.dawn.com/weekly/cowas/20020721.htm
Nawaz opened up by congratulating Kamran on his Mehrangate exposures which had recently appeared in the press, asking how the inquiry was progressing, and giving his own views. They exchanged information, each believing the other was being informed. They talked about how COAS Aslam Beg (sporter of shades in the shade) managed to get Rs 14 crore (140 million) from Yunis Habib, then of Habib Bank. This was deposited in the 'Survey Section 202' account of Military Intelligence (then headed by Major-General Javed Ashraf Kazi). From there Rs 6 crore was paid to President Ghulam Ishaq Khan's election cellmates (General Rafaqat, Roedad Khan, Ijlal Hyder Zaidi, etc.), and Rs 8 crore transferred to the ISI account. After lunch, Nawaz brought up the subject of how Aslam Beg early in 1991 had sought a meeting with him (then prime minister) to which he brought Major-General Asad Durrani, chief of the ISI. They told him that funds for vital on-going covert operations (not identified by Nawaz) were drying up, how they had a foolproof plan to generate money by dealing in drugs. They asked for his permission to associate themselves with the drug trade, assuring him of full secrecy and no chance of any trail leading back to them. REFERENCE: We never learn from history By Ardeshir Cowasjee dated 21 July 2002 Sunday 10 Jamadi-ul-Awwal 1423 http://www.dawn.com/weekly/cowas/20020721.htm
Nawaz remarked that on hearing this he felt the roof had caved in on him. He told them he could have nothing to do with such a plan and refused to give his approval. The Washington Post had just broken Kamran's story and when I asked why it had not broken earlier, he told me how they check and recheck, and that in the meantime, he had been busy with the Mehrangate affair on which, between May and August, he had filed seven stories. We must again ask: was Nawaz capable of saying what he did? Yes. Did Kamran invent the whole thing? Not likely. Is The Washington Post a responsible paper with credibility? Yes. Everybody who is anyone in Washington reads it over breakfast. Has it ever made mistakes? Yes. What is so earth-shattering about using drugs to make money? Drugs have been trafficked and used for covert operations for ages, by warlords, statesmen, chieftans and generals, used to gain territory, to buy or to harm the enemy. Remember how the staid Victorians of the British empire used opium to China's detriment. Remember the Americans and how they traded drugs in Vietnam, and the Iran-Contra affair. Can we believe Aslam Beg? Judging by his behaviour and record, no. Are we expected to believe Asad Durrani, a clever professional spook? Of course not. KARACHI: The Jang Group has been blackmailing the government to evade taxes,
Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (CAP) Chairman Khalid Arian claimed on Saturday. Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Arian alleged that the group embezzled Rs 2 billion with the help of two officials of the National Bank of Pakistan. He alleged that the group also blackmailed the cable operators, but they remained silent, fearing that their concerns could be taken as part of political confrontation. Arain appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the daily Jang and the Geo Television’s levelling false allegations against the association. Recently, he said, the group provoked the people of the Karachi to refuse to pay monthly fee to the operators by publishing a controversial advertisement. Arain alleged that the Geo Television had put the lives of the army troops at risk when it showed their positions after terrorists attacked on the GHQ inRawalpindi. “It was Geo, which first claimed that Mumbai attack suspect Ajmal Kasab was a Pakistani,” he said. He said the people reacted strongly against the CAP when the channel had telecast false news about President Asif Ali Zardari two months ago. He alleged the Geo Television had collected General Sales Tax but it did not deposit it to the national exchequer.

Cable-operator-640x480.jpg
KARACHI: The Cable Operators Association of Pakistan has accused a major media group of resorting to “blackmail” and said it is “inciting consumers to deny cable TV operatorstheir monthly dues” and depriving them of their livelihood.
Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club here on Saturday, the association’s chairman, Khalid Arain, said: “Geo and Jang have routinely used freedom of expression as a ploy to get their valid and invalid demands”. He was accompanied by president of the COAP Malik Furqan, general secretary Imran Nadeem and Punjab chapter’s secretary Tahir Javed. Khalid Arian said that Geo network was not only leveling false allegations against cable operators, but also trying to deprive them of their livelihood. “We ask if television viewers are paying for just one channel? Are other news and entertainment channels of no value?”
Urging the government to take legal action against the group, he said that Geo and Jang have been at odds with not only Nawaz Sharif government, but also with the Musharraf regime and other previous governments over just financial matters affecting them. Arian said that the group owes Pemra billions of rupees in dues. He said that group stopped depositing GST from advertisers in the national exchequer and the authorities had come to know about it only in 2007 when the owed amount exceeded billions of rupees. He also claimed that the group took a loan of Rs1 billion from National Bank of Pakistan by over-valuing its machinery used as collateral. AJMAL PAHARI VIDEO IS FAKE....The recently posted YouTube videos of suspected target killers Ajmal Pahari and Shahnawaz, confessing to belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), have not dented the party’s reputation, the MQM says. It has a ‘massive following in the masses’ and people are smart enough to figure out that the videos are mere ‘propaganda’.
