Frustrated Nawaz major impediment to change

ISLAMABAD: Mian Nawaz Sharif does not believe in what he says. He sounds frustrated and concerned. He even warns the people of the bleak future of Pakistan under Zardari-Gilani duo but when it comes to actions Sharif is the major impediment to a change for the better and subtly supports those whom he dubs the most corrupt and incompetent. Of late President Asif Ali Zardari acknowledged before a visitor that Nawaz Sharif’s politics gives great strength to his rule. “He knows that if he destabilises my government in return he would not have a stable government (when he is elected to power) too,” the president told the visitor.
In Jati Umrah too, the feeling is mutual. [HI]Recently the Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif unleashed a scathing attack on President Zardari and assertively urged Nawaz Sharif to launch a movement against the corrupt regime to secure Pakistan from a serious danger. According to a witness, in his reaction Nawaz Sharif surprised his younger brother and the witness too by hitting the table with his fist and making the announcement, “No way. We would not destabilize the system.”[/HI]
The masses are worried about the fate of Pakistan. They are unsure where would Pakistan end up in another two years if the present set of rulers continue (mis)ruling the country in the same fashion. But the Mian Sahib of Pakistani politics is concerned about the system- the system which in actual is protecting the corrupt, ruining the institutions, mocking the judiciary, breaking all records of misrule and bad governance and making the life of the people miserable.
In his public speech on Sunday in Lahore, Nawaz Sharif was right to say that the rulers in Islamabad have defamed democracy but perhaps does not realize that he too has his role in this. He also expressed his serious concern about the future of Pakistan and even said that if the prevailing situation persists, the future of the country could be bleak.
The problem with Mian is that he does not move and has no strategy to prevent the country from being pushed to a bleak future. He just roars, and pledges that he would not sit back until he resolves the peoples’ problems but does nothing. All what he does is merely public rhetoric- the trademark of our politicians. He makes public speeches once in a while, intermittently appear before the media and issues press statements to remind the people how badly they are governed, how callously the national wealth is being looted and how ruthlessly the institutions are being ruined. But he has nothing up his sleeve to stop all this.
If the PML-N chief could spare some time to re-visit his style of opposition’s politics, he would soon conclude that he is not defending the system, he is instead threatening it by indirectly defending the corrupt. The rulers in Islamabad are cruising in a pain-free manner and without having been disturbed by anyone. They don’t feel threatened from anyone, as they know that the elder Sharif and his party are there to guarantee their rule for full five-years term. They don’t mind harsh anti-government statements because they know it would not bring them down. They turn their deaf ear to the rare warnings issued because they know such “roars” are meaningless if not fake.
Mian sahib takes credit for getting the independent judiciary restored but despite his repeated rhetoric to protect the same he is acting like a spectator as the rulers see no end to mock the judiciary by ignoring or refusing to implement the apex court’s judgments. Except through public statements there is no PML-N support visible for the judiciary. The N-leadership pledges a lot but remains unmoved.
To this nation’s bad luck, we have one of the most corrupt and incompetent government in Pakistan’s history on one hand whereas on the other the major opposition party-the PML-N- is not only devoid of any strategy to save the country from a foreseeable danger but is too confused to differentiate between the system, democracy and a stinking government.
Mian sahib might be waiting for his turn and expecting a trouble free rule after he allows a smooth five-year term to the present rulers. But the man sitting in the Presidency it so shrewd that he could outsmart his opponents. About Nawaz Sharif, he is convinced that he does not know politics at all.
