Non Party Local Body Elections in Punjab

Najam Seti for months ago said PTI will be difficult to beat in local body election. PMLN have no party base at lower level and it will be difficult to rigg.

It is quite obvious that both PMLN and PPP did not want to hold local body elections otherwise they would have held these in the last 5 years. Now they have been forced to conduct these elections because Supreme Court has forced them to do so and has given them a dead-line to conduct these elections.

In order to conduct these elections, under SC instructions, all provincial governments are promulgating relevant laws. PMLN, Functional League etc seem to be supporting non-party based elections while MQM, PPP, PTI seem to be supporting party based elections for local bodies. The initial version of the new law put by PMLN before Punjab Assembly's committee seemed to be a mixture with street and mohallah level elections on non-party basis and elections for mayors on party basis.

Local bodies system is intended to solve day to day local problems of common man on a local level. Therefore, I think that before committing oneself as supporter of party based or non-party based local bodies elections, one should analyze what are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

As for motives, one can never be sure but can only make a guess.

In the final analysis, local bodies system is for the benefit of common man. So not-withstanding ones guess work about other's motives, what really matters is whether the common man is going to benefit more by party based or non-party based elections. This should be the sole criterion for adopting one method over the other.

What ultimately matters is how the lives of common Pakistanis can be made better. This is the criterion on which actions of all political parties should be judged.

Most Pakistanis would not care whether a step which can help in this regard is taken by PTI or PMLN.
