Is SUPARCO launching it on its own? or is it going to piggyback on a russian or chinese rocket? If its the latter, then what is new about this? Pakistan has sent out satellites through other countries previously as well.

Are we launching it ourselves? If yes, then good, better late than never, they should have done it long ago. If that's not the case.... then they can shove this satellite up their rectal openings and kill themselves. Nothing to write home about.

No Pakistan is not launching it on its own. We had the program to develop/test that level of boosters with solid fuel, but At the time of Mufsharuf the program was stopped as it could easily be converted into ICBMs. You must understand that Things don't happen overnight, And mind it I did not ridicule Musharuf in this. We have some limitations.

The first indigenous rocket REHBAR-I that Pakistan sent in space was equipped with weather satellite. The rocket and satellite were developed by SUPARCO and launched in June 1962 during Ayub Khan's time.

Suparco has no capability to launch satellites.I will be surprised if Suparco can build satellites by itself.Pakistan has a huge population and there is no reason why it can not produce world class engineers and scientists who can design, build and launch satellites..The problem is that technical education is not a priority in Pakistan.Nawaz and Zardari have been looting the country instead of making reforms and working to root out corruption. The government of Pakistan needs to wake up and make plans to industrialise the country. This can only be achieved if science and technology education is given a high priority.

For the next few decades, launching satellites and supplies to International Space Station would be a profitable business. Many private enterprises are trying to get into it world wide. The design and fabrication cost in Western countries is too high compared to the third world countries like Indian and Pakistan etc. For example, India launched its probe to the Mars last year at a cost less than it took on the movie Gravity. This will open up opportunities for Pakistanis in hi tech business. It is now or never. If only politicians could keep their paws away from the potential kickbacks.

Kudos to the Pakistani scientists and the whole project teams

Pakistan/ Suparco launched its first satellite in 1964. The program was shelved because of the stupidity of our leadership or perhaps its attention was diverted towards developing nuclear weapons and missile system. But the point is that it has been done before, and it can be done better this time.

I knew that. That is why I was rhetorically questioning the need for this thread. What is so special about this particular satellite launch next year that makes it news worthy. Not as if Pakistan is going to launch it from Kahuta. Its the same old piggy back routine. rent-a-rocket
