Opposition backs resolution: Sindh Assembly proposes Zardari for presidentship

KARACHI (updated on: August 22, 2008, 14:32 PST): Sindh Assembly on Friday unanimously voted for a treasury backed resolution declaring Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari as "the most suitable candidate for the office of President".

The resolution, which was tabled by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, at a hurriedly called session with Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in the chair, was moved under rule 211 of the Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh.

"This Assembly resolves that following the tragic Shahadat of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto,. Asif Ali Zardari showed political wisdom and through his efforts and reconciliation, a coalition government was formed at federal and provincial level," said the resolution.

"He (Zardari) in consultation and with the co-operation of coalition partners by his political sagacity and acumen, had restored true democracy in the country," it added.

It said: "Under the circumstances, Mr Asif Ali Zardari is the most suitable candidate for the office of President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This assembly supports him."

Those who supported to the resolution included its coalition partners in Sindh, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP), forward bloc of Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) and the combined opposition.

Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari of MQM was the first to take the floor saying that Zardari has demonstrated patriotism by raising the slogan of "Pakistan Khappe" in a highly charged environment of post-December 27.

Reading out the message of MQM's Quaid Altaf Hussain, Bukhari said PPP co-chairman has shown great political sagacity and acumen after February 18th elections and has saved the country from the then deep religio-political chaos.

He said his party, which was the first to nominate Zardari for the top slot, was also ready to become a proposer and seconder of the resolution for nomination of Zardari.
