[h=1]Iraq's Yazidis[/h][h=3]In danger[/h]Aug 5th 2014, 11:47 by J.A. | BAGHDAD

THE Iraqi and American authorities are rushing to arrange airdrops of food and water to the Yazidis as tens of thousands of followers of the secretive religion flee fundamentalist gunmen who took over the Iraqi town of Sinjar on August 3rd. A Yazidi elder reached by phone said they were trying to climb high enough into the nearby mountains that members of the Islamic State would not follow.
The Islamic State, an extremist group that operates in Iraq and Syria, took over the northern town of Mosul in June before streaking across Iraq. In taking Sinjar, it has for the first time overrun Kurdish soldiers who man the semi-autonomous northern province of Iraq and areas south of that (moving into positions that Iraqi troops fled). The Yazidis have particular reason to be worried. As adherents of one of Iraq’s smallest and most misunderstood religions, they have long been persecuted. The Islamic State has already targeted other minorities, expelling Christians and other ancient religious communities from Mosul last month after giving them a choice of converting or dying. The Sunni extremist group, which grew out of al-Qaeda in Iraq, is also going after Shia Muslims whom it considers infidels.
Yazidis consider themselves a distinct ethnic and religious group from the Kurds with whom they live (and who consider them Kurdish). Their religion, which combines elements of Zoroastrianism with Sufi Islam and beliefs dating back to ancient Mesopotamia, says God and seven angels safeguard the world. One called Malak Tawous, represented on earth in peacock form, was flung out of paradise for refusing to bow down to Adam. While the Yazidis see that as a sign of goodness, many Muslims view the figure as a fallen angel and label the Yazidis as devil-worshippers. Given the Yazidi belief in reincarnation, even moderate Muslims have a difficult time accepting the faith of their compatriots.
Today the faith has as few as 600,000 adherents worldwide, with as many in exile as in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria where it has been rooted for centuries. The religion incorporates a strict caste system, determining who can marry whom within the community (marriage outside is banned). At their main temple in Lalesh, religious elders with conical wool felt hats framed by long braids hold court while young men tend fires. At a recent ceremony marking the start of the year 6,764 of their calendar, Yazidis on pilgrimage from Europe and Australia climbed barefoot up a mountain to visit the tomb of a 12th century saint, holding aloft candles to symbolise the victory of light over darkness.
The Yazidi have long complained that neither Iraq's Arabs nor Kurds protect them. In 2007, in what remains the most lethal attack since the American-led war in 2003, suicide bombers driving trucks packed with explosives attacked a Yazidi village in northwestern Iraq, killing almost 800 people. Persecuted for centuries including under the Ottoman Empire, the Yazidi have always taken refuge in mountains and the caves in times of trouble. This time they might not have communities to which they can return.

Dual citizen burns Israeli passport in Gaza protest

A British citizen has renounced her dual nationality by burning her Israeli passport outside Downing Street in a protest against the IDF’s assault on Gaza, and the British government’s ongoing support for Israel.

Sonya Levene, supported by the campaign group Jews For Justice For Palestine, told onlookers she wished to denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have killed more than 1,800 people according the official UN estimates.

Why should I, a third generation British Jew of Eastern European heritage with no link to Israel, accept what the Zionists would have you believe is written in the Bible?" Levene said in a speech at the gates to Downing Street.
israeli-passport-burn-woman-.jpg

The dual citizenship was forced upon Sonya, she claims, after she attempted to leave Israel after a year spent with her family around 20 years ago. She was told she needed to accept the citizenship if she wished to return to Israel. She understands it is now very unlikely she will ever see her family there again.

Over 460,000 Gazans have been displaced by Operation Protective Edge, with over 80 percent of those killed believed to be civilians. Israel has lost a total of 64 IDF troops since the assault began. UK Foreign Office minister Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has resigned from the government, saying she can "no longer support" its policy on Gaza, suggesting the worldwide protests against Israel’s offensive are making an impact on policy makers.

[h=1]Isil militants execute dozens from Yazidi minority[/h]
Fears mount for thousands from minority groups fleeing insurgent onslaught amid retreat by Kurdish forces

Baghdad: Militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) executed dozens of people from Iraq’s Yazidi minority who refused to embrace Islam, witnesses said.

Witnesses told a news agency that 67 young men were shot dead by the militants in the northern town of Sinjar, which the militants stormed on Sunday, driving off hundreds of families who had been residing in the area.

The men had been detained by the Isil militants since Sunday, witnesses added.

The Kurdish Bas News Agency reported that 88 Yazidis had been executed.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people, many of them from Iraq’s Yazidi and Turkmen minorities, are in dire need of help after fleeing the militant takeover of Sinjar, rights activists said on Monday.

According to the UN, up to 200,000 people fled the northern town when the Isil militants moved in and Kurdish peshmerga troops retreated on Sunday.

Many were Yazidis, a small community that follows a 4,000-year-old faith and has been repeatedly targeted by militants who call them “devil-worshippers” because of their unique beliefs and practices.

Sinjar was the main hub of the Yazidis in Iraq but the town of 300,000 fell to the Isil, which took the main northern city of Mosul on June 10 and this weekend secured much of its hinterland.

“What Daash [the Arabic acronym by which Isil is known] has done against the Yazidis in Sinjar is ethnic cleansing,” said Khodhr Domli, a Yazidi rights activist based in the Kurdish city of Dohuk.

“There are still thousands of people heading to Dohuk but thousands are also trapped in the Sinjar mountains,” he told AFP.

“There are old people among them, children. They have no food nor water, some have died already.”

“We last we had contact with them was last night [Sunday] but this morning we have not been able to make contact,” Domli said. “They face a double threat: nature and Daash.”

As Kurdish fighters struggled to hold back the onslaught of the militants on Iraq’s north, some 40,000 Yazidis fled the northern towns of Sinjar and Zumar, said Jawhar Ali Begg, a spokesperson for the community.

“Thousands of Yazidi people have been killed,” he said. The militant group gave the Yazidis, who follow an ancient religion with links to Zoroastrianism, an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay a tax or face death, Begg added.

The United Nations said last month that more than 500,000 people have been displaced by the violence since June, bringing the total this year to 1.4 million, including more than 230,000 Syrian refugees.

Sinjar was also home to hundreds of families from the Turkmen Shiite minority who had fled to the nearby city of Tal Afar in the early days of the militant offensive nearly two months ago.

Ali Al Bayati, a Turkmen rights activist, said he was receiving very alarming reports about the people who had been forced back on the road on Sunday.

“Out of the 500 Turkmen Shiite families who had to flee, about 100 or more were able to reach a cement factory located about 15 kilometres outside Sinjar,” he said.

“They are still there and have nothing. They need help,” he said.

Bayati said that a larger group fleeing the raids was intercepted by Isil militants, who executed many of the men.

“The terrorists took the women as slaves and are now holding a large group at Tal Afar airport.”

The UN on Sunday expressed “grave concerns for the physical safety of these civilians” who fled Sinjar.

There was no information immediately available on the fate of the displaced from Iraq’s federal government or the autonomous Kurdish government.

[h=1]UN alarm over fate of Iraqi Yazidi children[/h]

Displaced Yazidis from Sinjar have been arriving in Iraq's Dahuk province

The UN children's agency has expressed "extreme concern" over reports that 40 children from Iraq's Yazidi minority died after an offensive by jihadists.
Unicef says reports indicate the children died as a "direct consequence of violence, displacement and dehydration" over the past two days.
Thousands of Yazidis fled into the mountains after the Islamic State (IS) overran the town of Sinjar on Sunday.
Yazidis follow an ancient faith that jihadists condemn as devil worship.
"Families who fled the area are in immediate need of urgent assistance, including up to 25,000 children who are now stranded in mountains surrounding Sinjar and are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including drinking water and sanitation services," Unicef said.
BBC Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher says the Unicef statement goes some way towards confirming some of the most disturbing reports coming out of the heartland of the Yazidi community.
Images posted on the internet showed small clusters of people gathered on the sides of a canyon in the Sinjar mountains.
There have been unconfirmed reports of massacres in Yazidi villages by the jihadists, our correspondent adds.
Jawhar Ali Begg, a spokesman for the Yazidi community, said on Monday that after overrunning Sinjar, IS (formerly known as Isis) had given them an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay a tax or face death.

"Their towns are now controlled by (the Islamic State) and their shrine has been blown up," he told the Associated Press news agency.
Sinjar fell along with the town of Zumar and two oilfields when IS attacked territory controlled by the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
Kurdish forces, known as Peshmerga, say they are planning a counter-attack and are calling in large numbers of fighters from other areas.
The Peshmerga have been battling militants for control of several towns stretching between the province of Nineveh and the Kurdish Iraqi province of Dahuk.
The weekend offensive by IS prompted Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki to order the air force to provide support to the Kurds on Monday.
It was the first sign of co-operation between Baghdad and the Kurdish region since Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, was taken over by IS in June.
Correspondents said it indicated a degree of rapprochement in the face of the country's deteriorating security crisis.
Militants seized large swathes of northern Iraq in June and declared the land they control in Syria and Iraq a "caliphate".

Reports coming in from Sinjar, a small town that was once home to Iraqi minority community, Yazidis, suggest that the Islamic State militants are carrying out a "genocide" in the town.
For the Sunni militants, the Yazidis are a race of "devil worshipers" and killing them would only amount to a "holy act."
The 4,000-year-old religious group has faced persecution for centuries for its unique belief and practices.
Earlier on Sunday, the Islamic State captured the town after driving away the Kurdish forces in the region. Witnesses claim that the militants are executing dozens of Yazidis for refusing to convert to Islam.
The Gulf News report claimed that 67 young men were shot dead by the militants. Besides executing the Yazidis, the Al Qaeda offshoot, is also reportedly taking Yazidi women for "jihad" marriage.
Mohammed al-Khuzai, an official with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society told NYTimes that ISIS took more than 100 Yazidi families to the airport at the nearby town of Tal Afar, where it executed the men.

"ISIS killed all the men," Khuzai said, "and are planning to keep the women for jihad marriage."
Reports have also come in claiming that the Islamic State militants have forcefully taken away a large number of children from the Yazidi town. A resident told McClatchy DC that militants were taking away young children from their families.
Several Sinjar local government and municipal workers also have been executed by the ISIS.
"Last night[Sunday] they arrested and executed four of my cousins because they worked for the municipality, and already they have begun destroying the homes of the people who fled,"a witness, who didn't want to be named, told McClatchy.
The United Nations that called the ISIS takeover of Sinjar as a 'Humanitarian Tragedy' also has raised concern over the fate of civilians, trapped in Jabal Sinjar mountains.
Reports claim that the ISIS militants are starving out the men, women and children stuck in the mountains without food and water.
"The United Nations has grave concerns for the physical safety of these civilians," Nickolay Mladenov, a top UN envoy in Iraq said in a statement, reported France24.

Yazidi Massacre by IS - Debunked

Remember that claim that 500 Yezidis ,including women, children, killed ,buried alive in mass grave from that Iraqi minister? One that used pics from Syrian Army's Aleppo barrel bombings, they are using proof of their own crimes as propaganda against IS.
Please compare these witness accounts with the proofless massacre claim from Iraqs human rights minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani

Will now post updates on what happened to Hatimiya / status of Kucho (7km apart in Sinjar)
Good news: almost certain there was no massacre in Hatimiya. The Iraqi minister disseminated a false report. Will have more updates soon.
Preface: very hard to get to bottom of conflicting/confused accountsnormal in states of chaos/trauma. Finally arrived at the following.
On D-Day, Hatimiya didnt flee; mukhtar was powerful in the region w/lot of clout & relational capital; people felt theyd be protected. But on Wednesday, an emir of #IS came to Hatimiya & Kucho, delivering a convert-to-Islam ultimatum. He told the villages: Were not after your $ or women; we just want to inform you that youre now part of the Islamic State and anyone in it must be Muslim. Said hed return Sunday to hear their response. Anticipating that US airstrikes would target nearby #IS positions, the villagers planned to make an escape when the bombing would throw IS into confusion. The airstrikes never came (to these particular IS positions). Hatimiya decided to flee anyway, did so on Sat night. All the families made it to the mountain alive, luckily not encountering jihadists. The village of Hatimiya is now empty, but because of the communal escapenot because of a massacre. On Sun. the emir returned, went first to Hatimiya, discovered it empty. Perturbed at the escape, he decided to place a watch over Kucho, to prevent the same from happening there. Its not surrounded but monitored. Those inside feel theyll be killed if they try to leave. Kucho remains in this state. The call to convert is real and remains active. The initial deadline passed, but no one has been executed. IS has supposedly not declared an extension of the conversion window; they just havent acted as of yet. Iraqs human rights minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced a massacre on Sunday, though he didnt refer to Hatimiya (that I know of). That this report of killing coinciding with the passing of the conversion deadline, which was real, in the Kuchu/Hatimiya area, led to inferences that Hatimiya was the site of a massacre. Al-Sudanis reports of a massacre could still be true, if they refer to a separate incident, though the news stopped carrying the report Monday. The 500 figure may also refer to fighters killed in multiple locations. Al-Sudani also mentioned live burials & 100s of women taken as slaveshavent seen anything yet on the former. People in Kucho were alive as of yesterday, but they didnt answer my calls today. Will try again tomorrow.

Same thing reported in this eyewitness account in a news article:
