HYDERABAD, March 13: A conference held here on Sunday appealed to well-wishers of Sindh, political parties and civil society to ensure maximum participation of people in the coming house and population census, scheduled to begin in April. It urged married couples who were part of joint families to get themselves enrolled as a family because a family in the census form was limited to five members. It called upon different communities in Sindh to write Sindhi in the column of mother tongue.

It said the census should be conducted in a fair and transparent manner and demanded a separate category in the census form for those who settled in Sindh after 1954.

The conference was jointly organised by the Awami Tehreek, Sindh Democratic Forum and the Strengthening Participatory Organisation in Qasimabad.

Addressing the conference, AT president Ayaz Latif Palijo said that the people of Sindh should realise the importance of the census because resources and funds were distributed among provinces on the basis of population.

Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz secretary-general Asif Baladi opposed inclusion in the census of people who had settled in Sindh after 1954 and said that the outsiders had no legitimate right to claim anything in the province.

Sindh United Party secretary-general Dr Dodo Maheri said that the politicians who had participated in last general elections should be asked to play their role in the census.

Sindh National Partys Amir Bhambhro said that Sindhi-speaking people living in Karachi should be motivated to actively participate in the census. Save Sindh Movements Idrees Chandio said that census should have been conducted six times over the past 63 years but only four were held under a strategy.

He said that through wrong figures, the population of Sindhi people was shown smaller than their real strength in the census held earlier.

Retired bureaucrat Hashim Leghari said that those who earned money in Sindh and sent it to other provinces should not be registered in the province.

He said that besides teachers, lady health workers should also be involved in the exercise and teams should be sent to 1,108 union councils of the province to ensure peoples maximum participation.

Senior journalist G.N. Mughal said that political parties should suspend their activities during the census and fully participate in the exercise. Outsiders should not be enrolled, he said.

Journalist Dastagir Bhatti said that those who spoke regional languages like Siraiki, Brohi and Kachhi should mention their mother tongue as Sindhi.

Ejaz Qureshi urged the people of Sindh to wake up and fully participate in the census.

A committee headed by Ejaz Qureshi as convener was formed to mobilise political parties and civil society to ensure the success of the census and create awareness among the people about the exercise.

Never ever forget to count Gypsies this time :)
Other day I saw a report telling that 4-5 % of Pakistani urban population consists of ever moving gypsies, and this gypsy population is never been counted, they don't hold any official documents, their kids are never registered in any kind of school and so on. Vibrant number of population is on ever increase, due to early marriages and high fertility rates. In matter of 30 years we added 100 million more, with total of 180 million Population. 7 is our lucky number in nations with huge population.
