Karachi, April 11 (IANS) A school book on sexual health, which exhorts use of 'secure procedure' during sexual intercourse, has been termed controversial as a parent asked 'Is this what we send our daughters to learn from school?'
The school book on sexual health is part of the curricula for class six to class 10 in government secondary schools of Karachi.
Called 'Zindagi guzarne ke maharaton per mubni taaleem' (Life Skill Based Education - LSBE), the book is supplementary besides the syllabus approved by the Sindh Text Book Board (STBB), the Daily Times reported Monday.
A girl student's father pointed out that in chapter 12, students have been instructed to use 'secure procedure' during sexual intercourse with their partners to avoid diseases like AIDS.
It goes on to instruct, 'During sex with an affected person or someone you don't know, a condom should be used'.
The man asked: 'Is this what we send our daughters to learn from school?'
The media report said that a few teachers backed out from teaching the book after reading it. Several principals and an education officer in Karachi have termed the content of the book controversial.
The content was contrary to the local values and should be modified, District Education Officer Shabbir Ahmed Jokhio was quoted as saying. He hoped that the objectionable content would be taken out from the book in the next year.

This is the result of awarding Aga Khan Foundation to take care of our Education Policies.
Our rulers are forced to follow the dictation from aboard.
This is very essential to introduce the "Enlightenment" in Muslim culture.
This system teaches and encourage our children that there is nothing bad in having sexual relationships with strangers.
The important thing is to take safe precautions.

DUBAI - Saudi Arabia should start teaching sex education in schools as it will help protect children from abuse, according to a study by researchers at the kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious university.

The study concluded there is a need for sex education in the conservative Muslim kingdom and recommended its introduction in all public schools, local daily Arab News reported on Wednesday.

Researchers at King Saud University said children are not adequately educated about sex because it is not on the school curriculum and parents are reluctant to speak to their children about such topics, according to the newspaper.

The study, which surveyed 200 couples from the Eastern and Riyadh provinces, found 80 percent of parents approved of the recommendation, while 43 percent were hesitant about discussing sex with their children, the paper said.

Eighty-seven percent of parents said they were concerned their children may be sexually harassed or abused, the paper added.

“Children should be equipped with enough information that would allow them to differentiate between right and wrong, and detect whether they are being used or lured into a situation in which they may be abused,” Mohammad al-Sheddi, a lawmaker and Human Rights Commission member, was quoted as saying.

Sex education is a controversial topic in Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to mix with unrelated men.

Much of life in the kingdom is governed by the strict Wahhabi branch of Islam, and law is heavily based on sharia, or Islamic law.

Laila al-Ohaideb, an Education Ministry spokeswoman, said the contents of any sex education programme would need a strong religious grounding.

“A project like this should involve several bodies and be supervised by psychiatrists, sociologists, educationists and sharia scholars. It should be founded on strong religious grounds,” she was quoted as saying.

Saudi trials mixed-sex education



DUBAI - Saudi Arabia has launched a trial of mixed-sex education in the latest move bring social reforms to the conservative Muslim country, local daily Arab News reported on Tuesday.

The Education Ministry has licensed 15 private elementary schools for girls to accept boys in the first, second and third grades, the newspaper reported, citing Muhammad Hassan Yousif, head of the Private and Foreign Education Committee at the ministry.

The boys would have to study in separate rooms from their female classmates, but would be able to mix in all other parts of the school, according to the paper.

“The boys can mix with girls in all school facilities including the campus, the courtyard as well as the cafeteria and also join them in the morning procession,” Yousif was quoted as saying.

Yousif said some schools have already begin accepting boys.

Once the boys finish their third year of schooling they would have to join elementary schools for boys, Arab News reported.

The co-education initiative is not being trialled in government schools, the paper added.

The move comes after Saudi Arabia’s first mixed-gender university, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, was inaugurated last month.

Saudi Arabia is the most conservative of all Gulf states, where the mixing of unmarried men and women is illegal.

With due respect , when our kids read these scientific Quranic verses, do we need to know about what phenomenon is this ?

Quran tells us about our creation...by sex.

Actually , eveyone know it by nature. but no gurantee, what is the safe way regarding health and religiously.

It is not not bad to know , teen people have the curosity , but in a nice and educated way.

The method of education and age matters in this case.

It should be the part of Islamic studies.

Real point of concern! WHO gave "Aga Khan Foundation" the job to take care of our Education Policies?
About 20-25 years earlier a friend " took her daughters away" from "Beacon House" School, Gulberg-Lahore stating he was deeply irritated as his 'daughters' had to attend the 'Dancing " classes (There). Point to ponder is "If "Beacon House school" had this outstanding syllabus/croteria TWO decades ago what damages they had done by now to our 'youth'?
(For some "Beacon House school" is the place where a "Friend of the friend" got job and teaches after not 'short listed for job in Army'! Better. adnan_swat answers this mind bogging question!

well there is no harm in having education about any subject and here about sex. can we afford to have a child suffering with aids? or can we afford to have a daughter who gets pragnent before marriege? there has to be a day when this education will be accepted. it is better to accept realities of life as soon as possible. plz open ur mind and hearts in this matter and remember parents and good book r the only way to educate our children. if our kid shall ask any other about his or her curasity about sex they shall surely misguide him or her.
