ISLAMABAD:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has for the first time ever hinted at joining a proposed grand opposition alliance led by Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif, indicating tough times ahead for the struggling government.
Acknowledging the PML-Ns stature among opposition parties, an MQM spokesperson Wasay Jaleel told The Express Tribune: The PML-N is a major opposition partywe are in a process of looking into the prospects of cooperating with it for a shared objective.
The comments came on the heels of Nawaz Sharifs weekend statement in which he said his party would be willing to include the MQM in the alliance to rid the country of a corrupt and discredited administration.
Nawaz Sharifs highly indicative desire and Wasay Jaleels statement coincided, indicating a change of hearts on both sides.
Also on early Sunday morning, Nawazs younger brother and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif flew to London from Islamabad and some reports suggested he might hold a meeting with MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
There were reports last week that Sharifs PML-N had decided to gather all political groups hostile to the government, including the MQM on a minimum common agenda of dislodging the government.
In recent years, the PML-N and MQM leaders have engaged in bitter verbal duels.
According to a report in this newspaper, Nawaz had assigned Shahbaz to establish direct contacts with Altaf.
Before his departure, Shahbaz himself, however, ruled out the possibility of a meeting with Altaf.
But things are appearing to be changing since the MQM quit the coalition led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Jaleel said: We will announce our policy in this regard in next two or three days, he added.
The MQM had recently quit the coalition governments in Sindh and at the centre over the postponement of elections on two seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly.
Governor Sindh Dr Ishartul Ebad, federal ministers along with 13 provincial ministers and an adviser have also tendered their resignations.
However, no decision had been taken so far over the resignations of the MQM since PPP is hopeful that it would be able to persuade the MQM to return as a coalition partner.
MQM ministers [federal and provincial] have tendered resignations, but it is the prerogative of the government to accept or reject them, said Jaleel.
Responding to a question whether MQM chief Altaf Hussain and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were scheduled to meet in London, Jaleel said: They are not going to meet.
MQM leaders Waseem Akhtar and Mustafa Azizabadi have said that their party was still in contact with the government, with Zardari having telephoned MQM chief Altaf Hussain. Political dialogue is (still) possible. We will not become part of any effort to dislodge the government, they said.

Would you not find it difficult to justify MQM's possible alliance with PML-N when MQM leaders were accusing Nawaz Sharif for 1992 operation and killings of MQM workers as recently as few weeks ago?

Title of thread is wrong, I request the admins to change. MQM has not signaled its willingness to join without any preamble, just has said it will look into it. It is against any effort to topple government.

MQM against joining bid to topple govt

The MQM spokesman said his party had always criticised wrong steps and policies of the government even when it was part of the ruling coalition. And now when the MQM is in the opposition it will continue to do the same with the support of other opposition parties.

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has reacted positively to Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif’s statement welcoming it into an ‘opposition alliance’, but has said it is not ready to join any move to topple the government.

We recognise PML-N’s mandate and will definitely cooperate with the party on the opposition benches in parliament, but we do not believe in plans to topple governments to achieve certain political goals,” MQM spokesman Wasay Jalil said while commenting on Mr Sharif’s indirect offer to the party to join an anti-government alliance.

Talking to Dawn on Sunday, Mr Jalil said the MQM had not received any formal offer from the PML-N, adding that the media would be informed about the party’s decision whenever such an offer was received.

He said the PML-N was the largest opposition party and the MQM was ready to work under it on the opposition benches.

The PML-N chief, talking to reporters after presiding over a party meeting in Lahore on Saturday, had expressed readiness to join hands with the MQM while “welcoming” it into what he called a grand political alliance “to rid the nation of the present government”.

Mr Jalil categorically stated that there had been no thinking in the MQM that the government should be removed before completing its term. However, he said, the party would continue to play its role of a ‘constructive’ opposition party.

The MQM spokesman said his party had always criticised wrong steps and policies of the government even when it was part of the ruling coalition. And now when the MQM is in the opposition it will continue to do the same with the support of other opposition parties.

When his attention was drawn to his party’s bitter relations with the PML-N in the past, he said MQM had nothing personal against anyone.

He, however, said the PML-N owed an answer to the nation as well as the MQM about its role during an army operation carried out in 1992 when Mr Sharif was the prime minister.

Mr Sharif’s statement came a day before the departure of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for London on a week-long visit amid speculations that he might meet MQM chief Altaf Hussain. A PML-N spokesman, however, said no such meeting was scheduled in London.

Meanwhile, official sources said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had handed over the additional charge of the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, earlier held by MQM’s Babar Ghouri, to Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain, indicating that this time the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has little hope of MQM returning to the government.

The MQM, which announced quitting the PPP-led coalition governments at the centre and in Sindh last week in protest against its alleged role in the postponement of elections on the two seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly in Karachi, has already submitted an application to the National Assembly speaker and the Senate chairman for allocation of seats on opposition benches.

If this is for Cooperation between Opposition in the PARLIAMENT then its OK cause MQM after joining Opposition has a ROLE to play in Parliament but if its some kind of ALLIANCE then their is NO JUSTIFICATION of all this for MQM.....They would loose their Support if they ever Dared for thinking another ALLIANCE with Nawaz Sharif cause most MQM supporters and even Workers still consider Nawaz Sharif as MURDERERS and DESTROYER of Karachi and MQM both.....

you are 200% right. I really amazed that how the leaders of PML-N see themselves in the mirror. Isn't there any principle in the Pakistani politics. It was decided in APDM that no party will ever make any alliance with MQM because of the target killings of 12 may. How can they forget the blood of Karachi's people. But I see it as a positive thing that PML-N is actually exposing itself like any other party that joins the MQM.
