good question. i myself am an atheist, but have very decent knowledge of hindu philosophy. of the theist schools of philosopy in hinduism, the belief is that hinuism is not polytheistic as many ppl make out to be rather it is pantheistic. i.e. all the goods are ultimately forms/representation of one unique god. in some ways it encompases what jagbani said. each of these forms has a different role and so no conflict.
of course hindu philosophy also includes 3 agnostic/atheist schools. so technically though i am an atheist,i am still a hindu.
lastly koi bhi sensible aadmi, aapke sawalon ka bura kyun manaega? agar uska bhagwan pe yakeen hai (unlike me), for him its a reseonable question. jo yakin nahin karte (like me) unke liye bhi accha sawal hai. the issue only comes up when questions are meant to prejudice (tasub) against any community. you have seen how zakir naik on indian media so aggressively tries to use logic to demean all other religions. no one has stopped him from doing that, though i think he is doing a very bad thing. neither has any hindu been killed because he insulted any hindu gods or writes against hindu philosophy etc.
