ISLAMABAD: Pakistans Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Umar Khan Ali Sherzai has said if the tour operators are asked to take oath on the Holy Quran, they will tell about those who drew commission of Rs20,000 to Rs25,000 per Haji in Pakistan.
Talking on telephone from Riyadh, he held the minister for religious affairs responsible for the poor arrangements made for Pakistans Haj pilgrims this year. He said the Pakistani Hujaj could not get transport and tents in Mina due to the poor policies of Hamid Saeed Kazmi.
Umer Sherzai called for setting up a high-level judicial commission, comprising Supreme Court judges, so that those responsible for difficulties faced by the Hujaj could be taken to the task. Ali Sherzai said he was sure that those responsible for the poor Haj arrangements at the holy land would be discredited in this world.
About his own services for Pakistans Haj pilgrims, he said: The minister tried his level best to keep me away from each and every arrangement. However, after observing pathetic conditions of Pakistani pilgrims, I went to the office of Muasasa South Asia chairman Adnan, accompanied by Haj Director Sultan Shah and Farogh Zaidi, to request him to provide some relief to the Pakistani Hujaj, he added.
He said supplementary tents, water tankers and makeshift bathrooms were made available to the Pakistan Hujaj due to his timely intervention. But thousands of Hujaj could not get these facilities.
He said he had prayed in Mina that Allah Almighty award exemplary punishment to those who had fleeced the Hujaj. Umar Sherzai said a Haj conference should be convened soon after the Haj operation was over.
I will also attend the conference and am ready to suggest measures to improve the arrangements in the light of my experience to evolve a national Haj policy, he added.
He set aside the claim of the minister that he had held meetings with King Abdullah and Prince Naif. The king is sick and has not held meetings with anybody, the ambassador explained.
He appreciated the governments decision to include the Foreign Ministry in Haj arrangements. The role of Pakistans ambassador is also crucial, as he remains updated regarding the situation in Saudi Arabia, he said. He said his tenure had already ended and his successor would hopefully be in a better position to serve next year.
Our correspondent adds: Talking to reporters, Science and Technology Minister Azam Khan Swati asked the prime minister to sack the minister for religious affairs for being the main culprit in poor Haj arrangements scandal.
Taking to task the director general of Haj is not fulfilling the basics of the justice until the central character of the scandal who is Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi is not proceeded against, he added.
The federal minister said it was a grave injustice to the pilgrims, who were put to the miseries owing to the corruption by the Haj minister, director general and other people in the ministry. It is a proven fact after the report submitted by the Senate inquiry committee some three months ago that the minister for religious affairs is the central character involved in the kickbacks and embezzlement in the Haj scam and the prime minister should immediately take him to task after sacking him, Azam Swati said.
Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi retaliated by pointing out that sections of the media had in the past carried reports about the corruption of Minister Azam Swati and his colleagues. Denying that he took kickbacks or embezzled public funds, he asked Swati to provide evidence to back up the allegations.
Azam Swati said it was against the interest of the country that funding for the social uplift sector under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was enhanced to Rs80 billion from 35 billion and budget for science and technology which was central to the development and prosperity of the country was reduced to Rs16 billion from Rs33 billion. He said the BISP was a worthless and valueless programme.
He said corruption in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was at its peak, adding the people of the province would make the Awami National Party accountable in the election in future.
The minister said the surge in the sugar prices had been made due to the inability of the federal cabinet because it fixed the price of the commodity at Rs65 per kg and was being sold at Rs130 in the markets owing to no check.

Pakistan Hajj scam inquiry: Top official kept on remand
By Syed Shoaib Hasan BBC News, Karachi

Each pilgrim to the Hajj is charged about 1,700 by Pakistan's government for travel and accommodation
A Pakistani court has ruled a former top official must stay in custody, amid an inquiry into what is being billed the nation's biggest Hajj fraud.
Rao Shakeel was head of the religious affairs ministry's Hajj directorate until his arrest on 14 November.
Pakistani pilgrims were allegedly given shabby accommodation in Saudi Arabia. Mr Shakeel denies wrongdoing.
Religious Affairs Minster Hamid Saeed Kazmi is resisting cabinet colleagues' pressure to quit over the scandal.
Mr Shakeel, who denies allegations of misappropriation of funds, was remanded by the court in Islamabad for another three days.
He already had his period in custody extended last week.
'Unfinished accommodation' The housing provided to pilgrims was said to lack basic facilities, such as running water, proper sanitation and electricity; in some cases the buildings were still under construction.
Each pilgrim is charged about 230,000 rupees (1,700; $2,700) by the government for transport and accommodation in Saudi Arabia during the Hajj.
It takes a long time for most ordinary Pakistani Muslims to save up that much money.
Outside the court, Mr Shakeel told journalists that "mismanagement had definitely taken place", but he denied financial wrongdoing, saying he had not been the only official in charge.
President Asif Ali Zardari ordered an investigation after a senior Saudi official wrote to Pakistani authorities claiming mismanagement.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, meanwhile, has banned the religious affairs minister from speaking to the media.
Hamid Saeed Kazmi has strongly denied allegations from one minister of direct involvement in the alleged scam.
The government is the largest provider of accommodation and travel for its citizens attending the Hajj.
Although increasing numbers of private operators are also offering Hajj services, 25,000 Pakistanis used the government service this year, bringing in around 5.8bn rupees in revenue.

No honour

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 The sorry tales emerging from this year’s Haj seem to multiply by the day. Delayed flights, surly airport staff at both ends, the fleecing of pilgrims of their money as ‘commission’ – the list goes on. Adding further insult to already considerable injury the two ministers most closely involved with the Haj fiasco have been hurling brickbats at one another and have now been told by the prime minister to cool their tempers. The concerned gentlemen – Azam Khan Swati who is the minister for science and technology and Hameed Saeed Kazmi who is the minister for religious affairs – are being anything but gentlemanly. Swati had accused Kazmi of being corrupt in the way that the Haj arrangements were made and demanded that he be removed from his cabinet post. Not to be outdone and puffing with outrage Kazmi filed a libel case against Swati demanding vast sums by way of recompense for his besmirched honour. The PM stepped in and halted the libel case and gave both men a verbal dressing down over the phone on Monday – but there is more to this than meets the eye.
Beneath the hot air and theatrics there lies a darker layer – sectarianism, and the schism between the Barelvi and Deobandi schools of thought. Kazmi is of the Barelvi school and Swati of the Deoband. Kazmi is said to have complained to the PM that a JUI-F senator had accused him of corruption and that the JUI-F leadership had ‘ganged-up’ on him because of his scholastic adherence. Jealousy comes onstage as it is said that, after it joined the coalition government at the centre, the JUI-F had tried to gain the religious affairs ministry – but it went to Kazmi of the PPP instead and there has been bad blood ever since. The religious affairs ministry is the plum that many seek because of the powerful patronage it confers on them and their close associates and their constituency. Sectarianism aside, the entire affair has left a nasty taste and smell in the mouths of those who sought to perform their religious duty. Politics and sectarianism – and the murk of political sectarianism as a separate element – have made the experience bitter for many. Nobody involved in the affair emerges with honour intact. And in a just world heads would roll.

Federal ministers lock horns in Hajj fiasco

Kazmi initiates defamation lawsuit against Azam Khan Swati who accused him of involvement in corruption

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani intervened and directed Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi to take back the compensation notice sent to Federal Minister of Science and Technology Azam Khan Swati, on Monday.
Gilani spoke to both ministers and directed them to refrain from issuing statements against each other, and also directed the religious affairs minister to submit a detailed report on the Hajj scam.
Earlier, Hamid Saeed Kazmi had served a defamation notice against Azam Khan Swati, seeking Rs100 million as compensation for wrongly involving him in the Hajj corruption case.
Express 24/7 correspondent Sabur Ali Syed reported that Swati spoke to the media in Mansera and said that without the connivance of the Religious Affairs Minister, it was not possible for officials to be involved in corruption.
Swati had appealed to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to dismiss Kazmi immediately as he is “directly involved in this scam in one way or another”.
Swati highlighted the plight of the Hajj pilgrims, saying they were innocent people who had been “looted” and overcharged and that facilities were not provided to them.
He said the massive corruption involved the religious affairs minister and that he cannot be exonerated. He further added that instead of arresting other officials, action should be taken against Kazmi.
The Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi served a legal notice on Azam Khan Swati and said that he should provide solid proof of corruption instead of leveling accusations against him.
“Swati is out to destroy my reputation,” said Kazmi, speaking to Express 24/7. “Two federal ministers should not get into an exercise that can create embarrassment for the government.
Kazmi said he is being victimised and has turned to the court because he is unable to find any other remedy.
“Being a minister I cannot say that I cannot take any responsibility, but wrongdoers who have directly committed this crime can also not be imposed on me,” said Kazmi.
He added that eyewitness accounts and details of the corruption and mismanagement had been given to him, and that he would disclose the people responsible for the debacle upon his return to Pakistan.
Ambassador calls for enquiry into Hajj scam
Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Omer Khan Sher Zai has asked the government to form a Judicial Commission to launch an inquiry into the Hajj controversy.
Talking to Express News earlier, he said a high level inquiry should be carried out to resolve this issue.
He termed all the allegations levelled against him by Hamid Saeed Kazmi as baseless.
Sherzai was of the view that due to the sensitive nature of the issue, it should not be politicised.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation being conducted into Hajj corruption scandal, Geo News reported on Thursday.

The court also raised its serious reservations on DG FIA Wasim Ahmed. Chief Justice remarked that current investigation into the scandal shows clear dishonesty of the FIA.

The federal minister Azam Sawati informed the court that, in a federal cabinet meeting, he had asked the Prime Minister for punishing federal minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi.

The courtroom was full of Hajj pilgrims during the hearing.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry heard a suo motu notice case regarding the alleged corruption in hajj arrangements.

The court also expressed displeasure over the issue that investigation into the scam is being carried out by a low rank officer (inspector).

The apex court adjourned the hearing of the case till December 13.

Re: Guys, Iftikhar chouldary can return the HAJ corruption money to HAJI

just wait and see. in my opinion at present SC will pass judgments against bureaucracy and weak ministers like the one of haj affairs. SC seems to be much more careful against strong ruling groups unless solid evidences r found.these look like testers to judge the reaction of ruling class, and i m sure the time is not far when the so called powerful class will be in the crunches of law.

Your confusion starts when in the title of the thred you make a statement.
"Guys, Iftikhar chaudhray can return the HAJ corruption money to Haji"

then in very next statement you ask a question. Are you asking a question or making a statement you confused individual ?
