PESHAWAR: The University of Peshawar (UoP) will be offering free higher education to students who pass the Bachelors of Arts/Bachelors of Science (BA/BSc) exams with distinction.
The condition applies to those students who choose to pursue further education and attain a masters or a PhD.
The announcement was made by UoP Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Rasool Jan while addressing students, parents and faculty members after the BA/BSc results were announced on Thursday.
Around 15,993 students appeared as regular candidates, out of which 9,096 students passed the exam, while 27,729 students appeared as private students of whom 10,819 passed.
Five among the top six position holders are from UoPs Jinnah College for Women. Harris Zad Gul from Oriental Degree College secured 1st position in BSc by scoring 486 marks. He was followed by Khushbakht Habib and Shumaila of Jinnah College with 468 and 456 marks, respectively.
Jinnah College also secured the top three positions for the BA exams. Neelam Shahi Mulk attained first position with 423 marks, followed by Fatima Nawaz and Saba Israr who scored 419 and 413.
Like others, I had my parents support and my teachers efforts behind me. But the reason why others failed to secure maximum marks is because they did not work as hard as I did, said Neelam Shahi Mulk, adding she wants to purse a masters degree in statistics.
Nawaz said she wanted to prepare for the CSS (Civil Superior Services) exam to pursue a career in public service, while Haris expressed his desire to become a mathematician.
VC Jan said university administration put in its full effort to announce the results on time despite the delay in exams due to the 2013 general elections. He said the results were not satisfactory, but were better than previous years.
The country will be heading in the right direction once the younger generation is on the right path, he said. He urged parents to not worry about future education expenses because UoP will bear them for the universitys position holders.
