It means when u make a mistake u should repent to Allah,and promise u will never do it again.
And from this incident it means that the sahabi RA disclosed a secret of the state to the enemies like our leaders are doing now adays,But when he realized it ,He asked for forgiveness and he was forgiven by both Allah SWT and Muhammad PBUH. So I think he means that whatever our leaders did,They should ask for forgiveness and become sincere with their people from now on...Wallaho Alam.
