The Final War is to be fought in Al-sham
From the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, ‘’A group of my community will not cease to fight holding on to the order of Allah, the Almighty, the betrayal or desertion of whomever deserts them will not harm them in the least, fighting its enemies, every time a war ends, a war with another people will ensue, Allah will restrain away the hearts of a people to sustain them with it, until the Final Hour comes, like a portion of dark night, and they will get scared by it, until they shall wear for it shields’, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘They are the people of Shaam’ and then the Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed with his finger to Shaam until he tired it’’ (Saheeh: Silsila al Ahadith As Saheeha)
Salamah bin Nufail (May Allah be pleased with him) said: While I was sitting with the Prophet (Peace be upon him) a man came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah Horses are being humiliated (ignored), and weapons are being laid down and people are claiming there is no more Jihad and war has ended” the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “They are lying! Fighting has just begun! Fighting has just begun! And a party of my Ummah will remain fighting on the true path and Allah will deviate the hearts of some men and Allah will provide the fighters from them until the final hour starts and the promise of Allah is fulfilled and good is on the foreheads of horses until the Day of Judgment. It is being revealed to me that I will be departing you soon and you would follow me while you are fighting each other and the house of the believers is in al Shaam” (Al-Shaam refers to Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. It could be used to refer to part or all of these countries. Narrated by Imam al-Nasa’i and is Hasan)
On the authority of ‘Abdullah bin Hawalah said: “O Messenger of Allah! Determine for me a land that I should live in, for if I knew that you would be with us for a long time, I would not choose anything over staying with you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Go to Shaam, go to Shaam, go to Shaam.” So, when he saw that I disliked Shaam, he said: “Do you know what Allah – the Mighty and Majestic – Said? He Said: “You are the cream of My lands to which I enter the best of My servants.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ahmad with a Sahih chain) And on the authority of Wasilah bin Al Asqa’ -May Allah be pleased with him- that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Go to Shaam for it is the best of Allahs lands on earth, He drives the best of His slaves to it” (At Tabarani, and declared Sahih by Albani in Saheeh Al Jami)

On the authority of Abu Dardaa- May Allah be pleased with him- said: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said The city of the Muslims on the day of the Great War (al-Malhamah) is in a fertile oasis next to a city called Damascus, and it is from the best cities of Shaam. And in another narration On the day of the Great War (al-Malhamah), the city of the Muslims is in a fertile oasis in which there is a city known as Damascus. It is the best location for the Muslims on that day. (Abu Daud and Ahmad and Hakim and declared its chain as Sahih and agreed upon by Dahabi and declared Sahih by ALbani in Fadaail ash Shaam)
'Auf bin Malik reported: "I came to the Prophet of Allah during the battle of Tabuk while he was in a leather tent and said Salaam, he said, 'Auf', I said 'Yes', he said, 'Come '...and he said: 'Count six things before the last hour: and the sixth: a treaty between you and the Westerners (Banu Asfar - the Romans), but they shall cheat you and march against you under 80 banners with 12000 soldiers under each banner, the city of the Muslims is in a fertile oasis in which there is a city known as Damascus. (Ahmad and Hakim and declared Sahih, also declared Sahih by Albani in Fadaail As Shaam and Dimashq)
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come until the Romans would land at al-A'maq or in Dabiq (a city in Syria now under IS control). An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people of the earth at that time will come from Medina-translation of city in Arabic, could be any city (to counteract them). When they will arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans would say: Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from amongst us. Let us fight with them; and the Muslims would say: Nay, by Allah, we would never get aside from you and from our brethren that you may fight them. They will then fight and a third (part) of the army would run away, whom Allah will never forgive. A third (part of the army). which would be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allah's eye, would be killed and the third who would never be put to trial would win and they would be conquerors of constantinople. And as they would be busy in distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, the Satan would cry: The Dajjal has taken your place among your family. They would then come out, but it would be lies. And when they would come to Syria, he would come out while they would be still preparing themselves for battle drawing up the ranks. Certainly, the time of prayer shall come and then Jesus (peace be upon him) son of Mary would descend and would lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allah would see him, it would (disappear) just as the salt dissolves itself in water and if he (Jesus) were not to confront him at all, even then it would dissolve completely, but Allah would kill him by his hand and he would show them his blood on his lance (the lance of Jesus Christ) .(Muslim Book 041, Number 6924)
