ISLAMABAD, April 4: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has sent a list of alleged bank loan defaulters to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the list includes PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, according to sources in the ECP.
The NAB provided another list to the ECP of people who benefited from plea bargain and deals for voluntarily returning the payable amounts.
According to the sources, the Sharif brothers have not returned Rs4.9 billion they borrowed from nine banks in 1994-95 on the plea that NAB had confiscated their properties which, according to them, was worth more than the amount of the loans.
The loans were taken from the National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank Limited, United Bank Limited, Muslim Commercial Bank, Punjab Mudaraba, Bank of Punjab, Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan (presently called Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited), Pakistan Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation and ICP Bank.
When contacted, NAB spokesman Ramzan Sajid declined to give details of the cases against the Sharifs. He neither denied nor confirmed that the names of the PML-N leaders were in the list.
We have sent the record of more than 16,000 people to the ECP, he said.
The spokesman said NAB had received records of 19,400 candidates and the record of 16,526 had been scrutinised and sent back to the ECP. Of the total applications received by NAB, 2,874 are under process and will be returned by late tonight, he added.
The election cell of NAB receives relevant information from regional offices, compiles the record of candidates and forwards it to the ECP within 24 hours, in accordance with a decision taken at a meeting with the ECP last month.
Representatives of relevant departments including National Database Registration Authority, Federal Board of Revenue, and State Bank of Pakistan attended the meeting.

According to the details issued by the ECP, former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf owns assets amounting to Rs.72 million. He owns two cars worth Rs.1.8 million. He will be receiving an additional Rs.8 million which he had loaned to his brother.

Former Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif owns a car worth Rs.20 million gifted by a friend along with assets amounting to Rs.14 million.

Oh come on Geo G, recently I posted the relevant part from the Pakistani Constitution, it clearly says "one million loan outstanding over a year". it doesn't says anything about court cases or stays taken. According to the constitution if someone didn't pay his million or over outstanding loan for over a year is disqualified, period.

Secondly, this case is even worst than what you let us believe. This case was brought to the courts by the other members of Mian Sharif family because the Gaaaaaaaaaaaaanj brothers fraudulently presented the properties i.e. Itafaq foundries etc as loan payments, when they were not the sole owners of the properties. You cannot give in lieu something which is not owned by you, period. They presented the properties without the consent or knowledge of the co-owners.

Hearing in Sharifs’ loan case adjourned

The Lahore High Court Umar Ata Bandial postponed the hearing of petition filed by a consortium of banks for winding up of three units of Ittefaq Group in order to recover about Rs 3 billion loans from the Sharifs.

The court on previous date of hearing had directed the sale committee to submit written quotation about auction of these units. The court had also directed the committee to also invite international buyers by advertising in foreign newspapers.

A petition was filed by a consortium of banks including, National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank Ltd, United Bank Ltd, Zarai Taraqiati Bank of Pakistan, Muslim Commercial Bank, Picic Bank, First Punjab Mudarba and Corporate Law Authority in 1998 for winding up of three units of Ittefaq Group in order to recover about Rs 3 billion loans from the Sharif family. These petitioner banks had sought order for the recovery of their loan through auction of Ittefaq Foundries, Ittefaq Textile Mills and Khalid Siraj Industries as they had failed to fulfil their financial commitments made against loan given to them.
