This is a disgracful news and another stain on the name of my country. Which shouldn't have been like that. I can hardly imagine a mind of only 18 years old could be that corrupt. However, I blame the seniors in the team and also the reluctance of PCB officials. They are incompetent buch of frauds and were not able to weather the storm of this controversial nature. They are not even equipped to handle the fluid situation which was changing rapidly.Their passive approach may cost these players the life time ban.Eventhough, I have come to the conclusion that they are guilty of these charges, the total atmosphere in Pakistani Cricket team for years is complacent even during the time of other charges, which eventually led to the players becoming fearless and even bold to engage in these illegal activities. The atmosphere at PCB fostered these habits instead of curbing them.
Now, the graceful thing for the PCB official is to volunterily resign their posts and go home. Let have some honest and clean character people take charge of the Board. I would Bring Majid Khan or Javid Miadad or even Imran Khan( if he is free) to the Board and let them set rules and implement them. Unless we do that, our reputation in the international cricket would remain tarnished and it would be difficult under the present circumstances ( when we can't even bring any international team to visit us in Pakistan) to establish our good reputation and save our team from total destruction.

7 ft Fast Bowler joining Pakistan Squad

Friday, 03 Sep, 2010

KARACHI: Pakistan have called up batsman Asad Shafiq and fast bowler Mohammad Irfan to replace the suspended players Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt.

The PCB chairman (Ijaz Butt) approved the names of the two players on the request of the team management and selection committee, a PCB statement said on Friday.

Both the players are currently playing with the Pakistan A team in Sri Lanka and will now join the senior team by next week, a Pakistan Cricket Board official said.

Tall left arm pacer Irfan has yet to play for the senior team while batsman Shafiq made his one-day international debut in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in June.

Pakistan test captain Butt and opening bowlers Amir and Asif face possible life bans after they were charged on Thursday under the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anti-corruption code.

Cricket fixer's cash trail leads to Pakistan captain Salman Butt as players are suspended by ICC

  • Three cricketers to be questioned by police today
  • Players charges by ICC under anti-corruption code
  • Pakistani diplomat claims players were set up
Cash used in the cricket betting scandal is understood to have been found in the belongings of the Pakistani team captain, the Daily Mail has learned.
Scotland Yard officers are to question Salman Butt today over how marked notes were discovered in police searches of his hotel room and his locker at Lords.
The revelation came on the day Pakistans most senior diplomat in Britain said the three cricketers engulfed in the betting scandal were set up.

we need a captain like that..... tremendous example

frankly if you watch this video, it does not look too good for Butt, Asif and Aamer. Does n't matter if Scotland Yard did not press criminal charges against the three players, the ICC believe they have violated article 2 of their code of conduct in this particular instance and players have been charged as such but they do not want to say too much in public at this stage. And while Sydney test was a dysfunctional game, the ICC won't press further charges because they have no evidence that any wrongdoing that occurred was for financial gain

ICC withdraws Asif and Amir from awards list

The International Cricket Council has withdrawn the names of suspended Pakistan fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir from next month's ICC awards in India. An ICC spokesman said both pacemen were struck off the nominations list. Amir was nominated in the emerging player of the year category while Asif was nominated for test player of the year.
Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt, Asif and Amir were questioned by police on Friday after being charged and suspended by the ICC on Thursday. Last week, a British tabloid accused the three Pakistan cricketers of intentionally bowling no-balls during the fourth Test against England at Lord's.

'All match-fixers are answerable to Dawood'

Karachi, September 4: A Pakistani bookmaker has revealed that most of the bookies involved in match-fixing are ultimately answerable to Indias most wanted man, Karachi-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Dawood who is believed to be worth 4 billion pounds, ultimately controls the cricket match-fixing business in Pakistan. His daughter Mahrukh is married to Junaid Miandad, son of former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad.

If Mazhar Majeed (the London-based agent under investigation for Lords Test spot-fixing) is guilty he is just small-fry, The Mirror quoted Nomi Khan, as saying.

The rumour is he has been hung out to dry by one of the big syndicates that operate here and in India, he added.

Khan also revealed that about 20 percent of the regular punters already know the outcome when they place their stake.

The players body language is the key sign, Khan said.

He also admitted that his biggest gamblers collectively often earn up to half a million pounds on apparently long odds.

Talking about his life, Khan said that he has been in the business for the past five years, and earns about 270,000 pounds a year.

The sum is staggering when compared to the countrys average earnings of 100 to 200 pounds a month.

I rent out a separate flat for my business because it is totally illegal. I have seven people in a room on phones all the time. When people say they will pay up over the phone this is a contract, Khan said.
The reason Ive managed to do so well here in Pakistan is that people will bet on anything in cricket. Cricket is the perfect sport, much more than football, because there are so many aspects of the match you can give odds on, he added.

PCB fumbles. Again.

The last week has shown the best and worst of Pakistan cricketand by best, I really mean worst.
By now, weve all seen the grainy
in hotel rooms and vans that implicated Mohammed Asif, Mohammed Amir, Kamran Akmal and captain Salman Butt in spot-fixing. That was bad enough, and has prompted enough anguish and hand-wringing to last us a few years.
But what followed was, in many ways, more disheartening. Instead of dealing with the fallout like a mature, competent organization, the PCB has bumbled its way to embarrassing lengths. Truth be told, no one could have expected it to be any different. After all, this is the same organization which did not see a single resignation after the Sri Lanka terrorist attacks in the spring of 2009, nor any high level departures after our brilliant tour to Australia, where we managed to win a grand total of zero games. But to see our worst fears about the ineptness of the PCB confirmed in these last few days has been galling.
Heres the basic story, for those disgusted enough to have buried their heads in the sand. Once the scandal broke out, the PCB faced a choice: The first option was that they could act swiftly; take the accused players out of the firing line and withdraw them from the touring party; cooperate fully with the ICC and Scotland Yard in their investigations; and understand the gravity of the problem.
The second option was to deny that any evidence of wrongdoing on the players part; insist that they would play the ODIs and T20s; push back against the ICCs Chief Executive recommendations that the players be temporarily sidelined; and force the ICCs hand in suspending the players .
Which do you think the geniuses at the PCB opted for?
It comes as no surprise that Haroon Lorgat announced the suspensions of Amir, Asif and Butt, pending the completion of the investigation. They cajoled and urged all they could, but the PCB was adamant: these were mere allegations, they said. And people are innocent until proven guilty.
Which is true, technically speaking. But when the charges are this serious, and the initial evidence is so compelling, it behoves responsible adults to comprehend the stakes involved. The removal of Amir, Asif and Butt from the touring party would not have been an admission of guilt; it wouldve been the simple and sensible thing to do under the circumstances. It wouldve served the purpose of sending a signal to the rest of the cricketing world than we mean business, and were going to handle things properly. And its not as if the three players would have been in tip-top mental, emotional and psychological shape to play cricket anyway. But as it is wont to do, the PCB shunned its responsibility, and made the ICC do its work for it.
And thats not all. You could almost excuse almost, I said the PCB not suspending the players straight away. Perhaps they wanted to send a message of solidarity with the players. Perhaps they didnt want to appear as if they were kowtowing before the big, bad ICC. Or perhaps they simply wanted to be stubborn. Whatever the rationale, you can at least understand it, if not agree with it.
But whats decidedly worse is the denialism that seems to have engulfed the usual suspects. Not to step on Nadeem F. Parachas toes, but it is truly amazing how blind to reason and fact segments of our society and government can be. Saying the players are innocent until proven guilty is one thing. But it is most assuredly another thing to suggest that the players have been set up as the High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan did or that the players are the victims of a conspiracy hatched by Indian intelligence agencies.
People actually believe this. Evidently, the Indians were in cahoots with a man who was the agent for half our team for years, as well as British tabloids, all for the express purpose of derailing the careers of our young stars. (It should be said that the conspiracy theory does have one thing going for it: it accounts for how Kamran Akmal has somehow escaped punishment only the darkest and most nefarious enemies of Pakistan and Pakistan cricket would spare him).
These are probably the same people who believe the floods were an Indian/American conspiracy. Over the years, Ive learned the hard way to not bother to try and convince these paragons of intellectual rigor.
The bare facts of the case point almost incontrovertibly to the players guilt. And if thats not enough, I challenge you to watch Salman Butts first interactions with the press after the story broke
from about 4:05 to 4:55 and tell me with a straight face the guys not involved. He certainly couldnt manage it.
Thankfully, the people who believe that this is a convoluted conspiracy are not the ones in charge of investigating the case, nor are they the ones handing out the punishments. From here on in, the ICC is in charge, for better or worse. One hopes that they do not brush things under the carpet, and take full toll of anyone found guilty.
I also hope contradicting what I said in the immediate aftermath of the scandal that Mohammad Amir be shown some leniency. As many have argued, he is as more a symptom than a cause of the corruption in cricket. In a society such as ours, where devotion to ones elders is paramount, it is exceedingly difficult to imagine standing up to so-called senior players like Asif and Butt if they are encouraging you to partake in their shenanigans.
This is not to say that he should get off scot-free, or even anything close. But it is to say a full understanding of the circumstances here is in order. Amir is an 18-year-old kid. That he can bowl better than 99% of men ever born does not make him a man. Hes still a kid, who merely happens to do one particular thing as capably as a man: bowl a cricket ball. I cant be the only one who wants to see him demonstrate that again.
