Imran Khan - Taxation and Assets disclosure issues

In the past, I have always been criticizing Imran Khan for underperforming in politics. I have always been of the opinion that he is a great person but lacks political acumen.

In his recent appearances on the talk shows he has been pushing on the Pakistani income tax system or lack of it and the requirement to disclose all the assets for all the politicians. I think these issues are not only game winners but also great for Pakistan's performance.

I was reading a paper on Pakistani tax system. Only 2 to 3% of 170 million Pakistanis pay income taxes. Most of them are from the middle class and from Karachi. The INCOME tax system in Pakistan is regressive. That is, the rich people pay proportionally less taxes as compared to middle class and poor people. Most of the taxes in Pakistan are indirect taxes, like sales taxes. These taxes get paid by everyone regardless of their income. If we use progressive income tax system like other countries, we won't need to borrow from blood suckers like IMF. I don't think that any of the rich politicians have paid any taxes.

The requirement of disclosure of politicians' assets will also bring forward people with big properties and how little taxes, if any, they have paid. It will also make the increase in their wealth during their term a part of the record. This way, any corrupt politicianscan be questioned.

I think that Imran should make these issues his political manifesto and give them the top ptiority . I think this will speed up his political success. He should take them and run.

What do you guys think?

You are absolutely right sher Bhai.

Regardless of Imran's poor political performance, he has a valid point on this issue.

But the problem is who will do it?

I don't know if you have ever read the economical model of late Dr. Mahboon -ul-Haque. it adresses the same issue. Dr. Haque was intended to bring all the big fish under tax network. But what happened to him? Ousted from the job. Huh

80-90 % members in the parliament are from these non tax payers, are you expecting them to bring something against them? Today, the fianance minister is saying he can not control the sugar mafia. They all are in the power corridors of Pakistan. Is this not the dilemma?

You said only 2-3% people pay tax and mostly of them are from middle class of Karachi. That's a great honor for Karachiittes. I salute karachi people then.

We need a revolution, bloody or peaceful, who cares.

Only if this Tax system improves in Pakistan, it will solve more than 65% deficit of economy.
