It seems the anthem was sung twice, when the clock struck 12 was to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day, not to break the world record. The record was broken one hour later when required number of people were gathered at the stadium.

Pakistan breaks world record of most people-singing national anthem

20110815_46.jpg
KARACHI: Pakistan achieved the world record for most people singing a national anthem simultaneously late Saturday night when 5,857 Pakistanis chanted the national anthem here at the Defence Stadium in connection with the Independence Day celebrations. The most noteworthy part of the achievement was that the event was arranged by two jingoistic youngsters, Abid Beli and Waqas Pai with a vigorous campaign on social and digital media without any sponsorship or support from the public or private sector. People along with their families and friends started gathering at the designated venue at about 10pm. Rangers, police and scout personnel surrounded the stadium, while volunteers organised the traffic and guided people. The excited crowd chanted slogans as they filled the ground. Youngsters with face paint and wristbands of national colours kept waving the Pakistani flag. Distinguished in the parade of national flags, was a 40-metre national flag held by youngsters. Renowned television host, entrepreneur and intellectualist Faisal Qureshi was hosting the event. Addressing the participants of the ceremony Beli the main organiser congratulated the people for breaking the world record of most people singing the national anthem. Later while talking to Daily Times he said that the idea was put forth by his associate Pai. He said that the objective behind organising the event was to motivate Pakistani youth to play their due role in the betterment of society. He was of the view that the bomb blasts across the country including the attack on General Headquarter (GHQ) and Abbottabad operation were the events that compelled the youth to gather up and do something for their country. Beli further said that earlier, India held the record for most people singing the national anthem but he said, it was a flaw as the Indians had sung ‘Vande Mataram’, which is not their national anthem. He further said that they wrote to the concerned authorities in this regard and in response the title was repealed and awarded to Philippines, where 5,248 students, staff, faculty and alumni of MSU-IIT sang ‘Lupang Hinirang’ Philippines’ national anthem on Sept 1, 2009. To a question he said that the behaviour of federal and provincial government was regrettable, as they did not permit the event to be organised at Ibn-e-Qasim Park on the pretext of security concerns. He said that political parties are provided with the permission of taking out rallies and large public meetings, but the government did not support citizens for a noble cause. Pai said not to him but for the entire nation it was a great achievement particularly when the country is facing deteriorating situation. He applauded the fervour of people, who gathered despite of rains, strike and other hurdles. He said that the cost of the event was about Rs 0.7 million which was contributed by the organisers and their friends. Only a minor sponsorship was offered at the eleventh hour, he added. He also appreciated the role of Defence Housing Authority, who provided them the venue without any cost. “Now we are planning to improve the record in upcoming years, beside forming other records. In this regard we would announce soon another event on Quaid-e-Azam day,” a fervent Pai said. Renowned politician Marvi Memon was also present on the occasion. She said that in 1947 Muslims of the sub-continent had earned their freedom and now they are free but yet to gain the real liberty. She appealed the masses to unite for the betterment and progress of the country. Captain Wasi, who was freed along with his ship crew after months-long captivity by the Somali pirates, was present on the occasion along with his daughter Laila Wasi. Addressing the ceremony, he said that disasters and tragedies have always encouraged nations, particularly Muslims to unite. In 1940s miseries of the Muslims of sub-continent encouraged them to fight for their freedom. Today, we are facing a number of problems again and the nation will unite soon as this is an opportunity to shun the differences, he added. Laila Wasi, a student of grade 6, while talking to Daily Times said that she wanted to see the metropolis becoming the city of peace. She appealed the entire nation to stand united. In the end, thousands of people sang the national anthem, breaking the previous records. Now the tickets’ record, photos and video evidences will be sent to the Guinness Book of World Record authorities as a formality for awarding the record to Pakistan. asad farooq

The journey to break the record

THE JOURNEY TO BREAK THE RECORD

The blog was initially intended for Express Tribune blog but they havent uploaded it yet.
When the idea to break the Guinness Book of World Record for Most People Singing National Anthem was presented to me first, I felt intrigued. With all the factors of division creating havoc in the society, it presented an excellent way to unite the Pakistanis once more and for that I joined Abid Beli and Waqas Pai to achieve this goal.
The path was difficult because the record was held by India with more than 100,000 participants, however there was an error. The Indian record mentioned Vande Mataram which was labeled as National Anthem which was not true since their anthem is Jana Gana Mana. They sang their national song which was accepted as their national anthem. Abid beli had notified the authorities at GBWR about the error and requested them for correction.
We still prepared with a target of nearly 110,000 and faced serious resistance. We had location problems, security problems, organizational problems, funding problems and some other problems better left unspoken. For two months the team did nothing except social media marketing while Abid Beli and Waqas Pai worked hard to get corporate, legal and every sort of support to make it happen.
We promoted the event through media and went on to shows when invited. I accompanied the duo to Maira Khans show and we sang National Anthem live. Near the end of July as hopes continued to plunge, the first breath of fresh air came in the form of GBWRs response the record had been corrected.
The record went back to Philippians that had just over 5000 participants and it was much easier to face. With new zeal the preparations were made until we had everything ready on 13th of August. I accompanied Abid Beli and Waqas Pai to DHA Zamzama Club, Khadda market in the afternoon to oversee the venue preparation and uploaded the pictures on Facebook to encourage everyone to come despite worsening situation of Karachi.
At the time of event everything went well except the weather. The sudden wind and rain destroyed the very valuable and expensive sound system, stage and backdrop. It severely discouraged people coming from far away due to low visibility, slippery roads, heavy rainfall and lack of surety for the return trip. The people at the venue, despite all odds continued to hope and showed their energy.
Everyone sang national songs, danced and remained hopeful to break the world record. People used text messages, Facebook and Twitter to convince others to join and it wasnt until two speakers were salvaged, placed in dry area and two microphones were given to organizers that made the crowd energetic. Everyone danced on the national songs, sang along and clapped and shouted enthusiastically when known icons like Faisal Qureshi, Mani, Marvi Memom and Abid beli spoke to the crowds.
The first singing took place at 12 to celebrate Pakistans Independence Day and the second singing an hour later to break the world record when required numbers were achieved. Even when power went out when we were moments away to start National Anthem to break the record, no one deterred and at Faisal Qureshis urging the crowd took out their cell phones and created the most magical atmosphere ever to achieve the goal.
I have uploaded some videos of the event on my Youtube account and formed a playlist for easy viewing.
Was it all worth it? Definitely. The whole experience is not so different than our common life. Unexpected changes, power shortages, destruction, despair, consistent resistance etc were common occurrences from start till the end of the event. But this event also showed the strengths of our nation that include the strong desire of our youth to unite for national cause, to remain hopeful even when hope seems gone, to join hands to make possible what seems impossible and to face the future with bigger dreams and a bigger will to achieve them.
I have been asked a question many times but refrained from answer. What will Pakistan achieve by breaking record of singing national anthem? It makes no sense.
To all of them I say this now. It is not the record itself but the purpose of it that counts. Uniting for the sake of Pakistan, to sing the National Anthem none of us bother to remember after completing school, in impossible conditions where we are dying by the dozens everyday marks the beginning of a united cause. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step and I see this historic event as the first step in the right direction.
If any of you still dont see the point of it then God help you.

PAKISTAN HOPING FOR NATIONAL ANTHEM WORLD RECORD

pakistan_flag.jpg

Thousands of enthusiastic singers assembled at the weekend at the Defence Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan, with an aim to break the world record for the most people singing a national anthem simultaneously.

A huge crowd of adults and children gathered to sing the Pakistani national anthem, 'Pak sar zameen' at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the country's 64th independence day.

The record attempt didn't go quite as smoothly as planned however. As the deadline approached, the crowd was still short of several hundred people and it took a flood of texts, tweets and Facebook messages at the last minute to attract extra singers.

The Express Tribune has reported that the final figure was 5,857 people, enough to break the previous record of 5,248, set in 2009 by the Philippines, with participants are said to have celebrated into the night.

Contrary to some reports, Guinness World Records officials were not in attendance at the event, with GWR currently awaiting evidence in order to verify if a record has been broken.
