CJP’s dams donation drive fails to woo overseas Pakistanis

Overseas Pakistanis from United States donated Rs5.7 million followed by UK from where Pakistanis donated Rs4.19 million. Pakistanis living in UAE have donated Rs4.13 million. Pakistanis living in Canada have donated Rs1.5 million. Interestingly, Rs18,490 have been donated from India and only Rs3,000 have been donated by Pakistanis from Afghanistan.

On the other hand, Secretary Law & Justice Commission of Pakistan Raheem Awan, while talking to The Express Tribune, said that overseas Pakistanis are very enthusiastic to donate to the fund but they could not do so due to different reasons, adding that there are very limited Pakistani banks branches situated in abroad.

Likewise, there are also other technical issues, he added. In view of these problems, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar has already given special instructions to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor to resolve these issues so that countrymen living abroad could easily send donations.

Awan also hoped that a visible change will be witnessed in the donation of overseas Pakistanis in the next few days.

The Qarz utaro Mulk sawaro campaign ran country wide for several months and it only raised about 250 million dollars.....the CJ fund until yesterday has managed to raise the equivalent of about 19 million dollars. The qarz utaro campaign se 1 qarza nahi utra it was not enuff to evne pay the interest on the debts....lets see if the CJ fund reaches 250 million from the current 19 million dollars....sofar 0,1% of the dam money raised....99,9% to go

It was a stupid idea to raise funds for dams given how urgent the matter is.

Govt should add taxes on consumption since FBR doesnt have capacity to collect taxes.

a) Rs 500 per month to electricity bills using over 100 units per month. Assuming there are at least 10 million electricity connections using over 100 units per month, this strategy would collect Rs 5 billion per month or Rs 60 billion per year. similar taxes need to be imposed on gas, internet and phone bills to raise another Rs 40 billion per year. This would generate a total of 100 billion

b) Annual tax of Rs 1000 per marla on all types of residential, agriculture, commercial and industrial land holdings over 4 marla. 1% dam tax should be imposed on all property transfer including gifts. This would generate a total of several hundred billions every year.

I heard ke dam funds are being accepted in only rupees, they shd accept in dollars as well so it will help the economy as well. Secondly 1450 billion on donation looks near to impossible , thats why most ppl are not much interested in it
