United Arab Emirates declares BlackBerry smartphone a possible threat to national security|US to pus

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Emirati officials have declared BlackBerry smartphones a potential threat to national security because users' data is stored overseas, where local laws don't apply and where analysts say it could be harder for authorities to monitor.
The move renews concerns about efforts by the United Arab Emirates to control the flow of information in the Gulf nation, which includes the business hub Dubai and the oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi. The federation of seven hereditary states actively censors websites and other forms of media seen as harming national security and conservative local values.
Because BlackBerry maker Research in Motion's computer servers are located outside the country, "it makes it easier for them to refuse requests from the authorities for users' personal data," said Lucie Morillon, head of the new media desk at advocacy group Reporters Without Borders, which monitors efforts to control smartphone use.
"The authorities cannot access BlackBerry information as easily as they can a local operator's information," she said.
It is the second major controversy over the Blackberry in the UAE. A year ago, the country's biggest state-run mobile operator was caught encouraging unwitting BlackBerry users to install software on the devices that could allow outsiders to peer inside. The government has never made fully clear what happened in that case.
In the latest flap, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority voiced fears that the BlackBerry manages data in a way that could allow it to be misused. BlackBerry devices were singled out because they are the only phones operating in the country that automatically relay users' information abroad, the regulator said.

UAE to block many BlackBerry services in October

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates says it plans to block some messaging and web services on BlackBerry smart phones beginning in October.
The country's telecommunications regulator said in a statement carried on state news agency WAM it is suspending services of messenger, e-mail and web browsing services.
The regulator says it made the decision after failing to bring the gadget's services in line with local laws.
UAE authorities said last week BlackBerry services could pose a threat to national security.
A spokeswoman for BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said the company had no immediate comment.

I cannot understand the approach of such nations who try to barricade the scientific development. They are hard to know that there is another world apart from their imagination. If such facilities are required to be properly utilize by the individuals so please trained them to get maximum use of such inventions rather than to restrict the persons to get use out of them. Due to this intrinsic approach toward the present world scenario the Muslims are being kept undeveloped and they are mentally not accepting what is beyond their imagination. Muslims have to change this approach if they are willing to survive in this world otherwise sooner or later they will perish from this globe.

I experience that in tis present world the use of such gadgets or services in such regions are so clumsy or slow and lost the use of such inventions.

They should block all electronics that xfer data from UAE to US/UK/==> Mossad. They should specially ban the chatrooms which is detriment to young Muslims. They should buy and install the siasat.pk software and modify to suit the local needs.

To protect young Muslims from getting caught into social problems, Pakistani Patriots would ban all dating and social chat rooms such as yahoo etc. Men have met each other and awaragardi is getting common resulting in haram pregnancies.

Only emails would be allowed with heavy censor that no porn materials are sent across

A spokesman for Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said that the ban sets a dangerous precedent.

Other countries, including India, are thought to have raised concerns about some functions on BlackBerries.

The UAE announced that it would block access to the BlackBerry services from October because of judicial, social and national security concerns. The mobile devices are thought to be hard to monitor.
However, the UAE has been accused of seeking to censor BlackBerry use.
It has also emerged that the ban will apply to foreign visitors in the country including the 100,000 travellers who pass through Dubai airport every day.
PJ Crowley, a State Department spokesman, indicated that the US Government would push for the ban to be lifted, describing it as a move in the wrong direction.
Were going to clarify with the UAE whats behind this announcement, but we think it sets a dangerous precedent, Mr Crowley said. It is our view that you should be opening up societies to these new technologies that have the opportunity to empower people.
The move is expected to undermine the UAEs growing popularity as a tourist and business destination. Last year, the country attempted to install software on residents phones to monitor private information.
Reporters Without Borders, a press-freedom group, has urged the UAE government to lift its ban and reach a compromise that does not limit the freedom of the Emirati population.
Research in Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerries, said it respects both the regulatory requirements of government and the security and privacy needs of corporations and consumers.

Hariri urges secrecy regarding Israeli spy ring investigation

(Kippreport (Dubai) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Lebanon's prime minister, Saad Hariri, on Thursday urged against leaking information in the matter of the ongoing investigations into Israeli spy networks, the Daily Star reported. "The investigations require secrecy and my reservations on leaks are to prevent Israelis from obtaining any information since resorting to the media led to the escape of several agents," Hariri was quoted as saying.

Investigations are ongoing in the matter of two employees at the state-run Alfa telecommunications firm, who face charges of spying for Israel. Charbel Azzi, a technician at Lebanon's Alfa mobile service provider, was arrested last month on charges that he supplied Israeli authorities with crucial data. Azzi has reportedly confessed to collaborating with Israeli authorities since 1996, local media reported.

Azzi is believed to have facilitated Israeli monitoring of calls and tracking of subscribers' locations.

Tarek al-Rabaa, an engineer identified as a partner of Charbel Azzi's, was charged Tuesday with spying for Israel, the Daily Star reported, adding that Reuters quoted security sources who called Rabaa "more dangerous than Charbel Azzi."Hizbullah MP Hassan Fadlallah told Parliament Thursday, "We may be facing the most dangerous spying operation in Lebanon's history, as spying agents provide the enemy with remote access [to the telecom network]," the report added.

Not just some Blackberry but the Internet and its all information is also went to main Hub where Internet connections are actually generated and their are two Hubs of Internet in the world and both are in USA(New York and Los Angeles) and are owned by Govt. of USA...So US Govt. also have access of all the information on the Internet as well...So banning Blackberry wont effect anything about Information gathering in USA...

Its very simply. All conversation, activities, pictures, are instantly fed into the CIA databases. Sure Hilary will try to remove th eban. She is loosing control over who says what.

Before a General Kyani emails his majors. colonels to take cation against a terrorist that are against us but siding with US, CIA instantly knows that and alerts the terrorist.

Very simple. Pakistan should come up with our won pakberry and totally ban the blackberry. But its not gonna happen

According to what I know, the Blackberry has a hidden software, which would allow the "CIA" to retrieve data from your Blackberry, this is specially made for use in UAE!!! This is the reason the UAE authorities are against the use of it in their country - Good move I think.

Saudi says deal reached on BlackBerry services

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia and the makers of the BlackBerry smartphone have reached a deal on accessing users' data that will avert a ban on the phone's messenger service, a Saudi official said Saturday.
The agreement, involving placing a BlackBerry server inside Saudi Arabia, would allow the government to monitor users' messages and allay official fears the service could be used for criminal purposes, the official said.
The deal could have wide-ranging implications for several other countries, including India and the United Arab Emirates, which have expressed similar concerns over how BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd., handles data.
The Saudi regulatory official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the details of the deal with the media, said tests were now under way to determine how to install a BlackBerry server inside the country.
Canadian International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan confirmed Friday to the Associated Press that Canadian officials were in talks with the Canada-based maker and Saudi officials in a bid to avert the ban. RIM has declined to comment on the talks.
The kingdom is one of a number of countries expressing concern that the device is a security threat because encrypted information sent on the phones is routed through overseas computers — making it impossible for local governments to monitor.
Critics, however, maintain that Saudi Arabia and other countries are more motivated by the desire to further curb freedom of expression and strengthen already tight controls over the media than by a fear of terrorism.
The United Arab Emirates has announced it will ban BlackBerry e-mail, messaging and Web browsing starting in October, and Indonesia and India are also demanding greater control over the data.
Analysts say RIM's expansion into fast-growing emerging markets is threatening to set off a wave of regulatory challenges, as its commitment to keep corporate e-mails secure rubs up against the desires of local law enforcement.
RIM says it does offer help to governments, but says its technology does not allow it, or any third party, to read encrypted e-mails sent by corporate BlackBerry users. The consumer version has a lower level of security.
Saudi Arabia's telecommunications regulator, known as the Communications and Information Technology Commission, announced the imminent ban on Tuesday, saying the BlackBerry service "in its present state does not meet regulatory requirements," according to the state news agency SPA.
Saudi security officials fear the service could be used by militant groups. The kingdom has been waging a crackdown for years against al-Qaida-linked extremists.
Saudi Arabia also enforces heavy policing of the Internet, blocking sites both for political content and for obscenities.
BlackBerry phones are known to be popular both among businesspeople and youth in the kingdom, where local media estimate there are some 750,000 BlackBerry users, who see the phones' relatively secure communication features as a way to avoid attention from the authorities

US, Israel spying behind BlackBerry woe

:(
DUBAI: Concerns over Israeli access to BlackBerry data, and the use of the device by the United States to spy on the United Arab Emirates are behind the Gulf state's moves to curb the smartphone, Dubai's police chief said.
"The Unites States is the primary beneficiary of having no controls over the BlackBerry, as it has an interest to spy on the UAE," Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said in remarks carried by the website of the daily Al-Khaleej on Friday.
"The West has accused us of curbing the liberties of BlackBerry users, while America, Israel, Britain and other countries are allowed access to all transferred data," Tamim added.
