Taliban claim assassination of Hamid Karzai's brother

KANDAHAR: The Taliban claimed responsibility for the assassination of President Hamid Karzais younger brother on Tuesday, calling it one of our biggest achievements in nearly a decade of war.
Taliban spokesman Usuf Ahmadi told AFP by telephone that the group had recently assigned a gunman to kill Ahmed Wali Karzai, a hugely powerful and controversial figure in the Afghan south.

Ahmed Wali Karzai, the younger brother of the Afghan president and a hugely powerful if controversial figure in southern Afghanistan, was assassinated at home on Tuesday, officials said.
The killing of his chief local powerbroker will be a huge loss for President Hamid Karzai in Kandahar, the heartland of the Taliban insurgency as NATO troops rush to start withdrawing combat troops after a decade of war.
Initial details were sketchy, with a family friend telling AFP on condition of anonymity that he was killed by a bodyguard while entertaining guests at home and an Afghan intelligence official saying he was shot dead by a guest.
We can confirm he has been martyred, Kandahar provincial government spokesman Zalmay Ayubi told AFP, providing no further details.
A health official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said Wali Karzai had been shot dead.
He was shot dead at his house by one of the visiting guests not by a body guard, at around 11:30 am (0700 GMT), said an official at Afghanistans intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security.
The official said the gunman had himself been killed by other bodyguards.
The family friend said a number of Wali Karzais guests were also killed in the gunfire, but there was no immediate confirmation of who or how many.
The assassination came just before the Afghan leader received French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on a surprise visit to Afghanistan where he announced that Paris would recall 1,000 soldiers by the end of next year.
Wali Karzai, head of Kandahars provincial council, was for years a deeply controversial figure, dogged by allegations of unsavoury links to Afghanistans lucrative opium trade and private security firms.
American documents leaked by Internet whistleblower WikiLeaks late last year painted him as a corrupt drugs baron, lifting the lid on Western thoughts long kept private on the presidents younger half brothers tainted record.
Kandahar is a make-or-break battleground in the US-led fight to defeat the insurgency, where the United States has poured in thousands of extra troops to wrest the initiative from the Taliban and bolster the Afghan government.
Afghanistan is ranked one of the most corrupt countries in the world, where official graft undermines public support for the Western-backed government and is believed to help fuel support for the Taliban insurgency.
A US cable in 2009 said a meeting with Wali Karzai captured one of the major challenges in Afghanistan: how to fight corruption and connect the people to their government, when the key government officials are themselves corrupt.
Wali Karzai, who ran his own private militia in the province, is reported to have said the plethora of independent security firms run by different men in the region should be brought under the control of one man.

Wali Karzai: Drugs baron, CIA agent or Afghan defender?

AFP July 12, 2011 (2 days ago)

KABUL: Ahmed Wali Karzai, the Afghan president’s assassinated younger brother, was either a drugs baron, a CIA agent or a fierce defender of the Afghan people, depending on who you listen to.
What is beyond dispute is that he was a controversial figure and a warlord who commanded tremendous power over Kandahar, one of the most restive provinces of the war-torn country and the spiritual home of the Taliban.
The son of a well-to-do political family from an influential Pashtun tribe, the Popalzai, he headed the provincial council in Kandahar for seven years, where he was widely considered to control all commercial and political dealings.
His powerful role necessitated regular talks with American forces waging a counterinsurgency in the key Taliban battleground.
But leaked cables released last year revealed true US feelings about the president’s half-brother, who was long dogged by claims of unsavoury links with the lucrative opium trade and private security firms.
After one meeting with US envoy Frank Ruggiero in September 2009, the American diplomat said of Karzai, known by the acronym “AWK”: “While we must deal with AWK as the head of the provincial council, he is widely understood to be corrupt and a narcotics trafficker.”
He always flamboyantly denied the mass of allegations against him, including that he ran private militias and claimed he escaped an assassination attempt in 2009. He wasn’t to be so lucky on Tuesday, when he was killed in his own home.
After the WikiLeaks debacle he told Tolo television: “Dear brother! First of all, I’ve no security company… If one is able to show one single contract under my name, I’ll take all responsibility for all against myself.”
Kandahar is a make-or-break southern battleground in the US-led fight to defeat the insurgency, and the United States has thousands of troops in the area trying to wrest initiative from the Taliban and bolster the Afghan government.
The New York Times reported in 2009 that the younger Karzai had been on the CIA payroll for most of the previous eight years for services that included fielding recruits for an Afghan paramilitary operating under CIA direction.
The newspaper reported that he helped the CIA contact and sometimes meet Taliban followers. As with most allegations levelled against him in the Western press, Karzai wasted no time denying the report.
Aged 49 and the youngest of six boys and a girl, Wali Karzai shared the same father as his presidential brother Hamid but had a different mother.
He studied at one of Kabul’s most prestigious schools, the Habibia High School, and after pro-communist forces took power in 1978 he went to live in Chicago, where he managed a branch of the family restaurant.
In the mid-1990s, he left behind two of his brothers in the United States to join his father and Hamid in Quetta, in southwestern Pakistan, where they were organising an anti-Soviet resistance.
Since the 2001 US-led invasion toppled the Taliban and installed Hamid as president, Wali Karzai “gradually built a powerful empire in Kandahar through the support of foreign backers and by bringing under his influence the province’s key commercial, military and contracting networks,” wrote Carl Forsberg, author of a key report on the southern province.
But his influence and family ties to the key battleground divided opinion among residents and foreign forces fighting the war in the south.
“He was viewed by many as an obstacle to change and progress in the south — by others as the most important figure in terms of bringing security,” said Candace Rondeaux, Afghanistan analyst for the International Crisis Group.
“He may have had more enemies than friends in the end,” she said.
Wali Karzai was a father of four. His youngest child, a boy, was born just three months ago, said a family member.

I wish one day Taliban claims that they have saved a life. I believe only the creator be it Ram or Allah (SWT) or Jesus or any God, has the authority to destroy. Judgement on who should die should come from the creator and not the created.

A suicide bomber has killed four people at a memorial service in Kandahar for the assassinated half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Officials say the bomber apparently hid explosives in his turban and detonated them near the entrance of the mosque.
President Karzai was not present at the memorial. Four of his other brothers were but escaped unharmed.
Ahmad Wali Karzai, a controversial but key figure in Nato's battle against the Taliban, was killed by his bodyguard.
President Karzai flew into Kandahar for his brother's funeral on Wednesday, but left the city before Thursday's service.
No group has so far admitted carrying out the mosque attack.
Another explosion later hit the centre of Kandahar, killing one person and injuring several others, said the police chief of Kandahar.
Chaos and panic The explosion in the Red Mosque took place just after noon (0730 GMT) in the southern Afghan city, as the service for Ahmad Wali Karzai was coming to an end.

I was in the mosque 30 minutes before the explosion took place.
Senior government officials, tribal elders and people from across the country were present at the memorial service for Ahmad Wali Karzai.
When the bomb went off, I was in the next street talking to other tribal elders.
According to eyewitnesses inside the mosque, the suicide attacker was prevented by security guards from entering.
The bomber blew himself up at one of gates of the mosque.
All the key roads have now been closed in the area.

Officials say the attacker was stopped at the mosque's entrance, where he blew himself up.
Witnesses, including President Karzai's spokesman Waheed Omer, said he had hidden the explosives in his turban. Provincial intelligence chief Gen Mohammad Naeem Momin told the Associated Press that early investigations supported the reports.
The BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kandahar said that security was not as tight as it could have been around the mosque.
Tradition dictates that mourners are not searched when attending memorials, says our correspondent, and several tribal elders told him they had not been searched.
The interior ministry and medical sources said four people and the bomber had been killed.
Among those killed was Hikmatullah Hikmat, the head of Kandahar's Ulema Council, said the ministry. The council is an influential body of clerics in charge of regulating religious issues in the province.
The ministry said a child was also among the dead.
_54065852_afghanistan_kandahar_apr2011.gif

"There was a prayer going on and after that prayer, the man came close to the director of the religious council and exploded," Kandahar governor Toryalai Wesa told AP.
Officials say the casualty figures could have been much higher had the attacker been able to get inside the mosque itself, says our correspondent.
Four of President Karzai's brothers, several other Karzai family members and Mr Wesa were in the mosque at the time. None were believed to have been hurt.
Appeal to Taliban Ahmad Wali Karzai was shot twice by his family friend and long-time head of security, Sardar Mohammad, on Tuesday. The bodyguard was himself killed almost immediately.
The Taliban said the attack was one of their top achievements in 10 years of war. However, correspondents say the bodyguard's motives remain unclear and it seems unlikely that someone so close to the Karzai family was working for the insurgents.
Ahmad Wali Karzai was seen by many as a key anti-Taliban figure, someone who stood up to them, using his private army and vast network to fight the insurgents, our correspondent says.

Security was tight during Wednesday's funeral

But he adds that his critics accused him of undermining the central government in Kabul.
On Wednesday, President Karzai wept at the graveside, and kissed his dead half-brother's face as senior politicians looked on.
The president then appealed to the militants to stop the bloodshed.
"My message for the Taliban is, my countryman, my brother, stop killing your own people," said Mr Karzai. "It's easy to kill and everyone can do it, but the real man is the one who can save people's lives."
Tuesday's killing was the latest and most high-profile in a series of assassinations of senior politicians and security commanders across the country.
