Israeli president Shimon Peres congratulates Pakistan's Musharraf on win

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli President Shimon Peres sent a letter congratulating Gen. Pervez Musharraf on his victory in Pakistan's presidential election, Peres' office said Monday, offering a surprising gesture of support for a military ruler whose government has no formal relations with the Jewish state.
Although we do not have formal relations, I would like
to convey my best wishes on your election as president of Pakistan for a second term, Peres wrote.
You have shown responsibility and strength in preventing the spread of violence and terrorism on many occasions and I carry in my heart your support for peace in the Middle East which I heard directly from you, he said.
Pakistan _ a Muslim country and key ally in the U.S.-led war against terrorism _ has no diplomatic ties with Israel, and the letter did not say when the two men had spoken.
Musharraf was overwhelmingly re-elected in Sunday's election. But much of the opposition boycotted the vote, and the country's Supreme Court must decide whether to confirm the result or disqualify Musharraf due to his retention of his powerful role as army chief.

Despite the legal battle and lack of formal ties with Pakistan, Peres thought it would be appropriate to send a congratulatory letter to Musharraf, said Peres' spokeswoman, Ayelet Frisch. She described Musharraf as a good friend of the president. Believe me, (the president) knows what he is doing, she said.
In April, Musharraf made a surprise offer to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an interview with the pan-Arab satellite television station Al-Arabiya. He told the Dubai-based station he would be willing to visit the Jewish state in order to help bring peace to the troubled Middle East.
Pakistan has not yet been involved in any negotiations concerning the Arab region, but hosted talks in late February in Islamabad, attended by Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, on issues ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the war in Iraq and the standoff with Iran.

When Barak met Musharraf

Defense minister runs into Pakistani president at Paris hotel; leaders exchange friendly greetings Itamar Eichner Published: 01.23.08, 09:08 / Israel News

Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf, bumped into each other and had a short conversation.

The two, who are visiting France these days, are staying in the same hotel. As Barak arrived at the hotel, his entourage ran into that of Musharraf, who was leaving for a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Barak took advantage of the opportunity, approached Musharraf and introduced himself: "I am the State of Israel's defense minister." The Pakistani leader nodded to signal that he had recognized the Israeli minister.

"We support your people and back you due to your significance in securing world peace," Barak said. Musharraf placed his hand on Barak's shoulder and replied, "Thank you very much. God willing, I hope you will make progress in the peace process."

The two leaders exchanged greetings and handshakes and parted as friends.

The two may meet again on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Barak is expected to arrive in Switzerland with an honorable Israeli delegation, which will include President Shimon Peres, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eliyahu Yishai.

The defense minister is scheduled to meet with the Quartet envoy to the Middle East, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

On Wednesday Barak is expected to meet with the French defense and foreign ministers, and will later be Sarkozy's guest at the lyse Palace.

Nothing but character assassination of a person....I think these days as that good for nothing UN report has revealed mouths of victims of Musharraf phobia have opened up while they were quite for so many days....Especially that Hamid Mir who have personal vendetta against Musharraf for some reason is going extent that he claim to be closer to BB when she returned and revealing those stuff whih even Naheed Khan and Safdar Abbasi two of most close people before her death even dont know about....He is trying his hardest to become hero of BB...These all stuff are just for few days and after that people would forget everything and get their focus on Zardari again as this stuff is nothing but cooked up by Govt. to kept media's attention from Zardari and 18 amendment which is challenged in court as now PMLN is also involved and they would do anything to save their neck and another reason behind this issue is recently when Khaibar Pakhtunkuwa issue was solved the new issue of Hazara province and South Punjab came in front and in order to divert people's attention from those issues these kind of technique has been used as everyone knows that both PPP and PMLN have problems with those issues and they want to aviod it as well....

You think musharraf is God.? even he is ready to accept his mistakes but you people are defending him at the cost of your emaan if you have it.

@ thepearl

When did I said that he didnt drunk or he didnt dance but just look at this thread it is all about Character assassination and nothing else just tell me a leader whom you think have never drunk??Even Bhutto admit that Publically that he drink and do you think that our prime minister and our president are Allah Walas who havent done anything wrong and what about Nawaz if he live in Raiwand does it automatically make him clear from all this???My whole post is about attention given to Musharraf while their are alot of issues which people of Pakistan are facing like Hazara people demanding province, 18 amendment, South Punjab, energy crisis etc. but instead of looking in to those matters media is just publishing Musharraf and his personality as PPP and PMLN are trying to divert the situation of all this for their personal motives...Especially PMLN who are exposed by 18 amendment in front of whole Pakistan especially Hazarawal as they have completely gave up their role for 3rd Prime ministership so that is what I am pointing towards...
