Pakistani contingent departs for Special Olympics 2011

KARACHI: The Pakistani contingent for the Special Olympics has departed for Athens, Greece, Geo News reported.

The contingent from Karachi comprises of 39 members, and before departing, a sense of pride was visible on the faces of the athletes and officials. They were more concerned about winning medals for Pakistan than their families. A large number of their family members were at the Jinnah International airport to bid them farewell.

The games will begin from June 25 in Athens, Greece where Pakistan will be represented by 89 athletes who will take part in eight events.

Three athletes could not take part in the games because their visas for Greece were denied.

Special Olympics; national heroes return home

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani heroes, participants of Athens Special Olympics, returned home today, Geo News reported on Tuesday.

National heroes arrived 18, 55 and 12 in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore respectively in separate flights. Family and friends received these athletes at the airports.

According to details, 85 Pakistani athletes participated in the event and bagged 57 medals including 17 gold, 27 silver and 13 bronze.

Most successful athlete Adeel Ameer won three gold medals. He was declared the fastest special athlete in the world.

More than 7500 athletes from 180 countries participated in the event.
