More than 80 per cent of Pakistani doctors in the United States accepted the theory of evolution
The Muslim world stands at a unique moment in its relation to evolutionary theory, stated the co-author of a major survey into attitudes towards evolution among Muslims globally.
According to a [/URL]report by T. V. Padma on the Science and Development Network website, acceptance of evolution varies widely across the Islamic world, demonstrating that stereotypical ideas about Islam and evolution are wrong, said Salman Hameed, director of the Centre for the Study of Science in Muslim Societies (SSiMS) at Hampshire College, United Sates.
But ideas are being moulded now, he said, because of new phenomena such as mass education, migration and access to the Internet.
“This is a unique moment,” Hameed told the 7th World Conference of Science Journalists (27–29 June) in Qatar.
According to the report, Hameed presented initial results from a survey that examines the attempts of educated Muslims to reconcile their religion with the evolutionary science.
The survey is being conducted among doctors and medical students in five Muslim countries — Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey — and also in three countries hosting Muslim diaspora — Turkish doctors in Germany; Pakistani doctors in the United Kingdom; and Arab, Pakistani and Turkish doctors in the United States.
Hameed told SciDev.Net they picked doctors as they would be scientifically literate and share similar educational and social backgrounds. The questions included whether the respondents accepted or rejected the general theory of evolution and, more specifically, whether microbial, animal and human forms of evolution are possible.
He presented the results of just two groups — Pakistanis in the United States and Malaysians in their home country.

Findings
More than 80 per cent of Pakistani doctors in the United States accepted the theory of evolution, including microbial, animal and human evolution.
The majority also believed that one could accept the theory of evolution and hold religious beliefs at the same time.
But most Malaysian doctors (in Malaysia) rejected the theory of evolution, especially with regard to humans.

Negotiating Modernity
While Hameed is optimistic that the basic principles of evolution will eventually become accepted, he said that Muslim countries are still “negotiating modernity” and many replies demonstrated the resulting confusion.
For example, a Turkish doctor said: “It is complicated … I accept evolution scientifically, but reject it religiously”. And a Pakistani medical student said: “I accept it when I am in a hospital and reject it when I go home”.
Young earth creationism, which holds that Earth was created around 6,000 years ago literally as described in the Bible, and is held by some, mainly US Christian groups, who reject evolution, was absent, demonstrating that media coverage of evolutionary debate needed to be more nuanced.
“Muslim contexts are different from the battles in the United States,” Hameed warned. Presenting Muslim attitudes as a controversy was premature and could be damaging, as the “dominant narrative is yet to emerge in the Muslim world”, where religion plays an important role in forming people’s worldviews.
“If evolution gets conflated with atheism, then a vast rejection, even of the basic principles, is quite possible,” he said. Human evolution, though, will likely continue to be a controversial subject — and perhaps be rejected by the majority of Muslims.

Even though it is still a theory with a few unanswered questions. Based on the arguments its likely to be true in comparison with other theories. Hats of to Pakistani doctors in US.

Well it may be ok for you to be a decendent of a monkey or ape...
but for us muslim we believe that human beings are ASHRAF UL MAKHLOOKAT ...
If pakistani doctors believe in evolutionary theory they are absolutely wrong......Being a doctor does not mean that they are also experts in religious studies and religious beliefs.

Allah is called our Rabb, which means: Who fosters, nourishes, brings up and regulate the things from the crudest state to that of the highest perfection, is such a matter to make it attain one condition after an other until it reaches its goal of completion.

He is also called Al-Bari, the Evolver and Al-Masuwwir, the Bestower of Forms/Fashioner in 59:24.

The concept of Evolution was first described by the Greeks, but it was further developed by the early Muslims.
Great Muslim scholars and scientists as Al-Kindi, Ibn-Rushd, Ibn Tufayl, Ibn-Arabi, Ibn-Khaldun al described and promoted the concept of Evolution. Before the 1800′s, Evolution Theory was known in Europe as the ‘Muhammedan Creation Theory’ and was described in almost all Muslim Medicine and Science Books. It was also part of normal education in the Muslim schools and Universities.

Ibn Khaldun [1332-1406, 400 years before Darwin!] wrote in his Muqaddimah, an Introduction to History:
“One should then look at the world of Creation. It started out from the minerals and progressed, in an ingenious, gradual manner to plants and animals. The last stage of minerals is connected with the first stage of plants, such as herbs and seedles plants. The last stage of plants such as palms and vine sis connected with the first stage of animals, such as snails and shellfish which have only the power to touch. The word ‘connection’ with regard to these created things means that the last stage of each group is fully prepared to become the first stage of the next group. The animal world then widens, its species become numerous, and, in a gradual process of creation, it finally leads to man, who is able to think and reflect. The higher stage of man is reached from the world of monkeys, in which both sagacity and perception are found, but which has not reached the stage of actual reflection and thinking. At this point we come to the first stage of man ( after the world of monkeys). This is as far as our (physical) observation extends.”
This is just one example out of hundreds of opinions and observations made by Muslim scholars in the early centuries of Islam. When Darwin made his own speculations based on the Muslim Theory of Evolution, it was taken up by the Materialist Movement of the West. Because the Theory of Evolution is not supported by the Bible, and also because Darwin’s speculations gave room for a Creator-less creation, Darwin’s version of the Theory was taken up by the Atheist. Through this Evolution Theory was seen as equal to Atheism, and Muslims, through loss of their knowledge and their aversion of the Materialist Colonial powers of the West that had conquered them, became to reject the Theory of Evolution. And took up together with the Christian world, the concept of Instant Creation. A concept that goes directly against the language of the Quran and its Message .

Dear Unicorn, evolution is a scientific theory based upon scientific principle of falsification and prediction. So far no evidence has come about to falsify this theory and a lot more fossils have been found that were predicted to be found which lend more and more support to the credibility of the theory. Even if missing links remain missing it still does not mean the theory is incorrect or is a failure.

Since so much evidence has been gathered and it is unlikely that anything will be found that will falsify this theory therefore it is taken as a fact.

regards and all the best.

this crappy evolution theory is in total contradiction with our beliefs......... a sound minded muslim could never believe it...

Dear riverblue, TOE does not contradict the quran but actually supports it. It is our lack of understanding of the quranic text that is to blame for all our misunderstandings and misconceptions.

Thanks Mr. Mughal1 I agree with you I don't know it in a fine detail some day when theory is replaced by fact I will not have argument

Any studies no matter how advanced it is, if it takes a Muslim away from the basic fundamentals of Islam is just a trash for his Aakhira. A muslim faith is based on Imaan. There may be many things in the religion that you cannot prove at a certain time frame because of our lack of understanding or because our scientific knowledge cannot justify it based on our understanding of the universe, but we as Muslims believe in it as it was told to us by Allah through his book and his messenger. If the unbelievers call us shortsighted because of it, so be it. I don't know about now, but ten years ago I heard from some of my friends that discussion of God is prohibited in Quaid-e-Azam University islamabad physics department because some lecturers do not belief in the concept of God.

firstly pakistani doctors are hardly successful as compared to indian and bangladeshi !!They are not superior in numbers or skills!!

Lol....i too was surprised once i was talking with a sensible pakistani who questioned about darwins theory !!

I only smiled at him and realized that these people can never beat us in science !!

No doubt, hinduism is the only scientific religion, which has catered to origin of mathematics, medicine science, economy, political science, aeronautical and many others fields !!
most of german scientists were inspired from vedas!!

My friends are confused over here.. there is a difference between
Evolution and Mutation.

mutations are changes in a genomic sequence: the DNA sequence of a cell's genome or the DNA or RNA sequence of a virus.

(Quran 59:24)
He is God - the Creator, the Maker, the Giver of Form. To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Him. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.

form/frm/

Verb: Bring together parts or combine to create (something).

Now lets look at the meaning of "evolution"
A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.

I rest my case ...

Religion is belief (no proof), everyone believes in their own religion from the bottom of their heart. Religious theories can't fight with science, because it will loose.Religions can't provide satisfactory answers to todays person, In west most people are educated, believe in science, fact and logic hence religion is week. Religion is bound to get weeker with time. Those societies that change with time and those religions which drop outdated pratice usually prosper and last longer. Even though many people today know that many things in one's religion doesn't make sence they still follow it. It looks like most of us need something to believe in......
