PIA is in a mess. It is an organisation where indiscipline runs amok, those involved in irregularities get promotions, merit is violated and non-professionals are made executives. Its pilots go on strikes frequently while the airline’s losses keep on rising. Half of its fleet is grounded because of bad decisions. It is mandatory for PIA’s management to conform to the rules and universally accepted corporate ethics. It has been driven to bankruptcy due to its executives not conforming to the conflict of interests rule.

There are an estimated 200-plus employees in this overstaffed organisation who have submitted fake degrees, yet they are preferred by the management for promotions, foreign postings and executive assignments. Another 600 are ghost employees who seldom come to its head office. PIA’s obituary seems to be planned. The irony is that its unions are busy making unacceptable demands instead of realising the gravity of the situation. They should demand transparent privatisation so that PIA can rebound to its past glory.

When your funds dedicated for an institution is not spent there and instead is looted by its managers, then these unfortunate incidents will keep happening. Just like your airplanes, trains, bridges etc.

This is the best reason for the PIa plane crash based on logical speculation

I was hearing news conference of PIA's Chairman Mr. Sehgal, in this conference one of his technical adviser mentioned that after one of the Pilot said something of the effect that He lost one of his engines, the Plane turn left !! ?? its a good question and He was not sure why the Aircraft turn towards this direction. But I think its a very crucial piece of information.


The Aircraft involved was a ATR-42 Turbo Prop, in case of an Engine Flame out the Engines goes in a so called Feather Mode, in this Mode Blades of the Engines turn into an angle so that they produce less drag in air, its necessary because ATR is a two engine Aircraft and if one side Engine is producing maximum thrust and other side is producing zero then in case of engine failure Pilot MUST check that the Up trim AND the Auto feather system work properly.. otherwise aircraft will be very hard to control.


However, some time this system does not work, we have heard that Aircraft lost one of its engine, could it be the case the Auto-Feathering system was not working properly? In simple terms, if the Aircraft's one side is producing zero thrust and a lot of Drag and other side producing Maximum thrust the the Aircraft will tend to bank on the side of the less thrust. That is why Pilots are trained not to turn on that particular side specially on low speed because it will make controlling Aircraft almost impossible and you spiral down to the ground. The footage shown on TV suggests that Aircraft hit the ground at a high rate of speed, indicating that Aircraft was not in control of the Pilots. Its quite possible that Pilot in this emergency situation overlooked few of the Checklists commands? Time will tell.


Any way controlling the Aircraft and try to grasp the situation and at the same time restart the engine is a difficult job, not impossible, Pilots are trained to do this in Simulators but there are a lots of things to do, have a look at the following restart procedure.


Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM) for an ATR-72. Section 1.16.20, page 4, has information on the ignition system:

Each engine is equipped with a high energy ignition system. It consists of two engine-mounted ignition exciters (A and B) powered by the DC essential bus and two part igniters, one for each ignition exciter.

The "Engine Restart In Flight" procedure, described on section 2.05.02, page 8, is:

Fuel Supply — Check
Condition lever — Fuel shutoff
Power lever — Flight idle
ENG START rotary — START A & B
EEC pushbutton — RESET if necessary or DESELECT if faulted
START pushbutton — ON
(at 10% NH)
Condition lever — Feather
Relight — Monitor
Power lever — Adjust to other engine
ENG START rotary — OFF


This is just a typical situation which might occur on a flight but before even Pilots attempt to restart engines he needs to assess the situation, the golden rules are Aviate, Navigate and Communicate, in general however its been noticed that Pilots focus their attention to the problem in hand so much so that they forgot to Fly the Aircraft meaning cutting or not completing the checklists and QRH procedures.

I know its easy to comment on some one but I am just saying what has been established in multiple crash investigations. Its not easy to find yourself suddenly in a situation where after a normal operation you suddenly find yourself with one dead engine and in this life and death situations people tend to react in a particular way, fear could take over your senses and depending on the time a Pilot has, it is really difficult to do all the procedures and checklists. Its very easy to blame a dead Pilot because he or she would not be able to defend themselves. We should be careful and have some respect and dignity for Crew and Passengers before jumping on any conclusion. I am just hoping that the investigation will be thorough and its findings will be published in near future. Its important to know what happened with this Aircraft so we can learn how to avoid it in future. sympathy for families who lost their love ones, may they all rest in Peace forever.

Analysis can be done over the next few days. It is time to mourn with those who lost loved one's, they are not helped by rationalizations at this time.
