Kidnapped border guards: Iran threatens to send troops into Pakistan

DUBAI: Iran said on Monday it would send forces into Pakistan to free five border guards believed to have been kidnapped by militants if Islamabad did not take measures to secure their release.

According to Iranian media reports, the guards were seized on Feb 6 in the Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchistan by militants who allegedly took them across the border to Pakistan.
“If Pakistan doesn’t take the needed steps to fight against the terrorist groups, we will send our forces onto Pakistani soil. We will not wait for this country,” Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli was quoted as telling the semi-official Mehr news agency.
An Iranian insurgent group calling itself Jaish al Adl had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, according to a Twitter account purporting to belong to the group. The account’s authenticity could not be immediately verified.
The area where the kidnappings took place has a history of unrest, with the mainly Sunni population complaining of discrimination by Iranian authorities, a charge Iran denies. Iranian security forces have also fought drug traffickers in the region that borders Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Iranian armed forces’ deputy chief of staff was quoted as telling the semi-official Fars news agency that Iran would “show tough confrontation in this case”.
“We will have no soft stand in this case and our neighbouring country … should account for its lack of action,” Major General Hossein Hassani Sa’di told reporters in Tehran on Monday, according to Fars English language website.
Sa’di said the guards were still alive, and underlined that “political and military measures are under way to set them free”, without elaborating.
Interior Minister Rahmani-Fazli said an Iranian delegation would visit Pakistan on Monday to secure the guards’ release, state news agency ISNA reported.
In October, 14 Iranian border guards were killed and three others captured in the same area in an attack that ISNA said was carried out by Jaish al-Adl.
Jundollah militant group, which Iran says is linked to al Qaeda, has claimed a number of attacks and kidnappings since 2003, including a 2010 suicide bombing that killed dozens of people at a mosque.

TEHRAN: Tehran's interior minister has warned Pakistan that Iranian forces may enter Pakistani and Afghan territory to release border guards reported to have been seized by a rebel group.
Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli's remarks on state TV come a week after the little-known Jaish al-Adl posted photos on Twitter of five men it claims are border guards it seized near Pakistan.
He said Iran had asked Pakistan to treat the case “strongly and seriously” or allow Iran to secure the remote region “deep on Afghanistan and Pakistan soil.”
“Otherwise we do consider it our own right to intervene and create a new security sphere for our safety,” he said.—AP
Reuters adds: According to Iranian media reports, the guards were seized on February 6 in the Iranian province of Sistan-Balochistan by militants who allegedly took them across the border to Pakistan.

ایران کے وزیر داخلہ عبد الرضا رحمان نے کہا ہے کہ اگر پاکستان نے ایرانی سکیورٹی محافظین کو رہا کرانے کےلیے کچھ نہ کیا تو ایران پاکستان میں اپنی فوجی بھیج کر ان کو رہا کرانے کا حق محفوظ رکھتا ہے۔


انھوں نے کہا پہلے تو ایران ان محافظین کی رہائی کے لیے پاکستان وفد بھیجےگا لیکن اگر انھوں نے ایسا نہ کیا تو وہ اپنی فورسز کو پاکستان میں بھیج کر اپنےسرحدی محافظین رہا کرانے کا حق محفوظ رکھتا ہے۔ تقریباً دس روز پہلے ایرانی سنی گروپ جیش العدل نامی تنظیم نے پانچ ایرانی سکیورٹی گارڈ کو اغوا کر لیا تھا۔ یہ گروپ ایران کے صوبے سیستان اور بلوچستان میں سرگرم ہے۔ پاکستان کا اِس معاملے پر ردعمل معلوم کرنے کے لیے جب دفتر خارجہ کی ترجمان تسنیم اسلم سے رابطہ کیا گیا تو اُنھوں نے بتایا کہ ایرانی وزیر داخلہ کے بیان کی تصدیق متعلقہ حکام سے کی گئی ہے اور جب باقاعدہ یہ بیان پاکستان کو موصول ہوگا تو سرکاری طور پر پاکستان کوئی رد عمل جاری کرئے گا۔

العریبہ نیوز چینل نےگزشتہ روز مغوی محافظین کی ایک ویڈیو نشر کی ہے جس میں ایک ایرانی محافظ یہ کہتے ہوئے سنا گیا ہے کہ وہ خیریت سے ہیں اور ایران کو جیش العدل کے مطالبوں پر غور کرنا چاہیے۔

ایک ایرانی اہلکار نے کہا ہے کہ اس سے پہلے جب ایسے واقعات ہوئے تو پاکستان نے مثبت انداز میں مدد کی ہے۔ خیال رہے کہ جیش العدل کا قیام 2012 میں عمل میں آیا تھا اور یہ گروپ گذشتہ برس اکتوبر میں اس وقت خبروں میں رہا تھا جب اس نے 14 ایرانی فوجیوں کو ایک کارروائی میں ہلاک کر دیا تھا۔
ان ہلاکتوں کے جواب میں ایرانی حکام نے 16 افراد کو پھانسی دی تھی جن کا تعلق سنی شدت پسند تنظیموں سے بتایا جاتا تھا۔
ایران نے پیر کے روز تہران میں پاکستانی سفیر کو طلب کر کے اس واقعے پر احتجاج کیا ہے۔
