06.01.10 Tropical Cyclone Phet Threatens the Indian and Pakistani Coastlines

NASA satellite imagery confirmed that Tropical cyclone 03A has intensified quickly in the last 24 hours, and as a result, the storm has been renamed Tropical Storm Phet. Phet is located in the Arabian Sea, Northern Indian Ocean, and is threatening the Indian and Pakistani coastlines.

NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Tropical Storm Phet on June 1 at 9:11 UTC (5:11 EDT) and captured an infrared image of the cloud top temperatures. The image indicated large areas of high, cold cloud tops, as cold as -63 degrees Fahrenheit, indicating strong convection.

At 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT) on June 1, Tropical Storm Phet had maximum sustained winds near 55 knots (62 mph) with higher gusts. Phet was located about 550 miles south-southwest of Karachi, Pakistan, near 16.8 North and 62.2 East. Phet is moving to the northwest near 6 knots (7 mph).

Current landmasses threatened by Phet include: India (Gujarat), Pakistan (Sindh and Balochistan).

Phet is forecast to continue strengthening and turn northeast later this week. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts landfall by the end of the week in the border area between India and Pakistan.

Regional warnings are already in effect for the Indian and Pakistani coastlines from Thursday on. The Indian Meteorological Department's Regional Specialized Meteorological Center noted on June 1, "Under the influence of this system, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls would commence over coastal areas of Gujarat from June 3 and increase thereafter. Squally winds with speed reaching 55-65 kmph (34-40 mph) (with higher gusts) would commence along and off Gujarat coast from June 2 and increase gradually." Have Sindh / Baluchistan officials issued a warning yet ?? Even if it was low risk alert ?? did anyone hear of anything ?? If the cyclone/hurricane/ cyclonic storm is being followed, it has to be something, even if nothing drastically serious. NASA's talking about it too. None of the TV channels in Karachi are covering this.

A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. Tropical cyclones feed on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation ofwater vapor contained in the moist air. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows, leading to their classification as "warm core" storm systems. Tropical cyclones originate in the doldrums about 10 degrees away from the equator.
The term "tropical" refers to both the geographic origin of these systems, which form almost exclusively in tropical regions of the globe, and their formation in maritime tropical air masses. The term "cyclone" refers to such storms' cyclonic nature, withcounterclockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise rotation in theSouthern Hemisphere. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
While tropical cyclones can produce extremely powerful winds and torrential rain, they are also able to produce high waves and damagingstorm surge as well as spawning tornadoes. They develop over large bodies of warm water, and lose their strength if they move over land. This is why coastal regions can receive significant damage from a tropical cyclone, while inland regions are relatively safe from receiving strong winds. Heavy rains, however, can produce significant flooding inland, and storm surges can produce extensive coastal flooding up to 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the coastline. Although their effects on human populations can be devastating, tropical cyclones can also relievedrought conditions. They also carry heat and energy away from the tropics and transport it toward temperate latitudes, which makes them an important part of the global atmospheric circulation mechanism. As a result, tropical cyclones help to maintain equilibrium in the Earth'stroposphere, and to maintain a relatively stable and warm temperature worldwide.
Many tropical cyclones develop when the atmospheric conditions around a weak disturbance in the atmosphere are favorable. The background environment is modulated by climatological cycles and patterns such as the Madden-Julian oscillation, El Nio-Southern Oscillation, and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. Others form when other types of cyclones acquire tropical characteristics. Tropical systems are then moved by steering winds in the troposphere; if the conditions remain favorable, the tropical disturbance intensifies, and can even develop an eye. On the other end of the spectrum, if the conditions around the system deteriorate or the tropical cyclone makes landfall, the system weakens and eventually dissipates. It is not possible to artificially induce the dissipation of these systems with current technology.

Specially in Karachi where drainage system is almost non-existent, it can be a disaster.

Thunderclouds are getting ready to stage a loud play in Sindh, the weatherman has warned.
According to PPI, the depression in central Arabian Sea has intensified into a tropical cyclone. It is presently located at about 1,100 kilometres south-southwest of Karachi and is expected to move towards north and north west within 24 hours and then curve towards Sindh, said Pakistan Meteorological Department Director-General Dr Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry on Tuesday afternoon.
Heavy rains are expected in the coastal areas of Sindh from Thursday to Saturday. Chief Meteorologist at Karachi Riaz Ahmed has said that the storm will lead to heavy rains in Sindh and Makran and winds will rage at speeds up to 120 km per hour. According to the meteorology department, rains with gusty winds, dust storms and thunderstorms are expected in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Hyderabad and southern parts of Mirpurkhas on Friday and Saturday.
Due to the cyclone, sea conditions are expected to be quite rough and high tides are likely to develop near the Sindh-Makran coast. Fishermen have been instructed not to go too far out into the sea from Thursday to Saturday due to the gusty winds expected within 48 hours, said Thatta DCO Manzoor Ahmed Sheikh. The meteorology department has also warned fishermen to return from the deep sea by Wednesday evening and refrain from venturing any further till after Saturday.
He told journalists in Thatta that the storm can affect towns and villages located along the sea. Relevant departments in Badin and Hyderabad have been instructed to take necessary steps to prepare for any emergency that might be created by heavy rains.
According to Sheikh, schools in five coastal talukas have been selected as emergency camps if the need arises. Meanwhile, villagers at the coastline have been advised to shift to safer areas. According to Hyderabad DCO Aftab Khatri, all necessary arrangements have been made. The storm is likely to hit coastal areas of Sindh and Makran in the next 36 hours.
No bathing, swimming in the sea
The city administrator, Fazlur Rehman, has imposed section 144, thereby banning bathing or swimming in the sea along the entire length of the coast within the city district government’s limit. He was informed by the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Islamabad that a depression has formed in central Arabian Sea and the current environmental conditions including are likely to turn this depression into a tropical cyclone.
According to the administrator, he has directed relevant officials to take all precautionary measures especially in the coastal areas including Keamari, Saddar, Korangi, Landhi and Bin Qasim towns, for safeguarding the life and property of people.

KARACHI: Cyclone Phet is likely to hit coastal areas of Karachi, Chief Meteorologist Arif Mehmood said on Wednesday.

The cyclone moved to coastal areas of the city has intensified and now lies about 920 kilometers southwest of Karachi.

Pakistan Navy and maritime security agencies put on high alert over cyclone threat.

Shikarpur, Gidani, Naseerabad, Hub, Jackabad, Mitthi, Umarkot and adjacent areas has received showers, while Karachi is expected to be lashed by the driving rains.

Fishermen have pulled boats and fishing trawler back to the shore over cyclone fears.

Precautionary measures are being taken in preparation for the cyclone. Government food relief center has been operated and medical facilities have been sent to health department with the cooperation of UN agencies.

The cyclone emergency centre of health department has also been operated where medical staff is also present.

Cyclone Phet approaching Pakistans coastal areas

ISLAMABAD: The tropical cyclone, named Phet, in the Arabian Sea was likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, met office reports said.
The cyclone had moved in a northwestern direction during the past 12 hours and was now cantered at 17 degree North and 61 degree East, about 900 kilometres southwest of Karachi.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre associated with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning that the fishermen of Sindh and Balochistan who are in the open sea should return to the coast immediately.

All fishermen were advised not to venture in the open sea till Saturday.

Initially, the storm is likely to move in a northwestern direction close to the Oman coast and then expected to re-curve in a northeastern direction toward Pakistans coastal areas.

The official source at the met office told APP that the waves caused as a result of the storm can be a dozen feet high in the sea.

Under the influence of this cyclone, heavy rains accompanied with dust and thunderstorms are expected in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

Sea conditions along the Sindh-Makran coast are also expected to be rough during the next 48 hours.

According to reports, around 170 boats were currently missing in the sea while fishermen and people living in coastal areas had been advised to keep alert as the storm was likely to approach the countrys coastal areas during the next 24 hours.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Wednesday issued directives to civil authority and district administrations of Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad and Tharparkar to take precautionary measures in view of approaching cyclone and resultant rains.

He directed them that all precautionary measures should be taken for the safety of life and property of people living in the coastal areas.

He instructed that relief camps should be immediately established in coastal areas and people that are likely to be affected be shifted to these camps to ward off any untoward situation.

He called for chalking out a coordinated strategy by the concerned departments and organisations.

The Chief Minister asked health and livestock departments to set up camps for monitoring and treatment of livestock and affected people

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has announced state of emergency in Karachi,Thatta, Badin, Mirpur Khas, Tharparkar and Umerkot districts keeping in view threat of cyclone and torrential rains.

A meeting of Disaster Management Committee presided by Chief Minister Sindh was held here to review the post cyclone and rains situation. Chief Minister has imposed emergency in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas and Umerkot and directed the concerned authorities to provide life saving boats in Thatta and Badin and cleaning of storm drains in Karachi on immediate basis.

Cyclone Phet likely to heads Pakistan today

KARACHI: Heavy rainfall with stormy winds related to tropical cyclone Phet hitting the coast of the Gulf state of Oman and will approach to Pakistan coastal belt after midday today.

The people in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan are being evacuated to the relief camps in view of imminent Phet.

The district administration of Thattas coastal area of Keti Bandar started to evacuate people to safer places to relief camps in Garhu, Ghorabari, Kharochan and Bghan and in this connection, transportation is being arranged.

Meantime, Deputy Commissioner in Gwadar port city of Balochistan imposed Section-144 in the coastal areas for three days in view of imminent danger of lashing storm and banned fishing and swimming.

All the concerned departments including Pakistan Navy and hospitals have been put on high alert.

Deputy Commissioner Lasbela also imposed Section-1444 in coastal areas of Gadani, Dam, Sonmiani and Spait and the relief centers have been established at government schools in these areas.

However, at mainland in Ras Hadd (eastern region), the wind speed is much less at 85 km/h, and we expect it to drop further on Saturday as it moves away from Oman, Oman metrological department said.

The storm will pack winds with speed reaching as high as 140 kilometers at the time of landfall, the weather office said.

The cyclone will hit the coasal belt of Sindh and Baluchistan on Sunday with weaken intensity. Sporadic rainfall related to the system will continue in coastal areas upto coming Tuesday.

Phet initially had been forecast to become a Category 5 storm, the most powerful category with winds of over 156 mph.

So far weather in Karachi is not showing any signs of Cyclone could likely to hit immediately but one thing is for sure that the first house which would flood in this whole cyclone if it hit Karachi would be Bilawal House because its near the sea shore of Karachi called sea view...
