Few days ago someone mentioned something to me and then something along the same line was brought up here by my favourite nagin dancer
The statement I am talking about was he said all these big well know Islamic institutes, madrassas and universities like Al Azar or Jamia Dar Ul Uloom don't teach the Quran, Quran is just a very tiny portion of their syllabus/curriculum. And since my favourite nagin dancer even after years of scholarship under "authentic scholars" seems to really know nothing about the Quran except a story or two from it and that too twisted in ways to justify his sect.
So when I looked into this claim, sad to say he was right. for example Dar Al Uloom requires 140 credit hours to obtain a degree on Bachelors in Islamic studies. And guess how much of 140 credit hours include studying and understanding the Quran. Only 16 credit hours. And all those 16 hours are not studying the Quran but rather tafsir from the likes of Tabari and Tafsir ul Jalalayn. You need an additional 90 hrs to get a Masters degree. And guess how many are given to the Quran. 12 and yes that too only tafsirs.
Al Azhar is no better. Its Islamic dept offers degrees and courses in Tafsir and Qur'anic Sciences, Tafsir, Ulum al-Qur'an, Asbab al-Nuzul, Study of the Six Canonical Books Ilm al-Rijal (Biographies of Hadith narrators) Usul al-Hadith, Analysis of Hadith chains and texts They have around 12 more of these but none of them to do with anything with the Quran.
And its pretty much the case with the others too. Quran is hardly the focus of study in Islamic Universities. How ironic and sad is it that Islamic universities and high places of Islamic education hardly teach the book which is the foundation of this deen.
