LAHORE: The 5th Pakistan Mega Leather Show 2019, the biggest exhibition of leather products in the country, concluded on Wednesday with many foreign visitors, including Chinese organisations, taking a keen interest in the growing leather industry of Pakistan.

Adviser to Prime Minister to Commerce Abdul Razzaq Dawood inaugurated the 2nd largest event of Southeast Asia, while Ambassador for Italy Dr Stefano Pontecorvo especially participated in the event and interacted with entrepreneurs, businessmen and buyers from Pakistan and abroad.

Abdul Razzaq Dawood congratulated the members of Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association (PFMA) and Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) on the success of the event. The adviser also visited the stalls and interacted with national and international exhibitors.

PFMA Chairman Hassan Javed and PTA Agha Saddain, during the inauguration ceremony, commented on the great potential of Pakistan’s leather industry.

“We have received an overwhelming response from entrepreneurs, investors and all other stakeholders of the industry. Production and tanning of leather along with manufacturing of leather goods is the second biggest export-oriented industry in the manufacturing sector of Pakistan. The rapid growth of this industry has attracted many international buyers to invest in the training facilities for this labour-intensive industry,” they remarked.

The forum provided a viable platform for nurturing stronger ties or collaborations between the allied industries of the leather sector of Pakistan.

The event attracted potential buyers and investors from China, India, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Cyprus, USA, UAE, Spain and Tunisia.

Given the sheer scale of the show and its benefits for these businesses, maximum participation from the government sector was also witnessed. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industries and other regulatory institutions provided unprecedented support for the event.

Biggest drawback for Pakistani industry is that they manufacture for other famous brands and thus get very low profits.

If Pakistani brands get famous in the world then real benefits can b achieved.

Leather was at one time a major export and cow hide used to sell for around 10 thousand rupees, now a cow hide is around one thousand rupee !!!
Most of the chemicals and oils required for processing leather are imported the cheapest chemicals are imported from INDIA and high quality from Europe.
Our product can not be competitive, plus our leather processing is outdated and technologically backward

I am interested can you tell me more? How can we achieve the competitive edge again?Mostly vegan processing is used abroad which use zero chromium!
While we use tons of chromium and lead based dies.
Why our leather quality is terrible? Can name any brand locally who do international standard hide processing.

Brother thank you for your interest, I am not an expert in this field, but our leather is not terrible our hides coming from slaughter houses and have very few cuts and if processed with best chemicals and state of the art machines can capture the export market, provided the materials used are produced locally since import prices are rising due to rupee depreciation.
Some brands in Sialkot are international. Kasur, Sialkot and Karachi have major leather industries / tanneries
