ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday staged the first show as the joint opposition in parliament when they jointly submitted a requisition for the National Assembly’s session to discuss a range of issues, particularly the raging violence in Karachi.
The two parties, which entered a political marriage a few days ago and have a combined strength of 118 members, submitted the requisition under Article 54(3) of the constitution. The document was singed by 92 members of the PML-N and 11 MNAs of the MQM.
PML-N’s chief whip in the NA, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, along with MNAs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and Malik Abrar Ahmed and MQM’s Abdul Qadir Khanzada, SA Iqbal Qadri, Sufyan Yousaf submitted the application.
The two parties told journalists that the requisition was submitted to discuss the brewing law and order situation in Karachi and the failure of police and other law enforcement agencies to protect innocent citizens.
In recent times, the PML-N had put the onus on the MQM for the deteriorating security situation in Karachi along with the Pakistan People’s Party and Awami National Party.

Muslim League, MQM to work as joint opposition
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Muttahida Qaumi Movement agreed to work as combined opposition in Pakistan's federal parliament and provincial assemblies
Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Wednesday agreed to work as combined opposition in the federal parliament and provincial assemblies, marking a step forward towards a broad-based anti-government alliance.
The agreement was announced in a joint statement after a first formal meeting between the two parties attended by senior leaders from both sides.
“We have decided to play forceful role as combined opposition on national issues within the parameters of the law and the constitution,” said the statement read out MQM deputy parliamentary leader Haider Abbas Rizvi.
The PML-N was represented at the meeting by Senator Ishaq Dar, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Mushaidullah Khan. The MQM team included Rizvi, Waseem Akhtar and Raza Haroon.
According to the statement the meeting held detailed discussions on the security situation, deteriorating law and order, rising corruption, “rigging” in the recent Kashmir elections and abuse of power by the Pakistan People’s Party-led coalition government.
Responding to a question, Dar said there was no schedule yet for a meeting PML-N chief and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and London-residing MQM head Altaf Hussain.
Both sides however confirmed a plan for exchange of visits by PML-N and MQM delegations to each other’s headquarters in Lahore and Karachi respectively.
