Sweatcoin, the free app that gives you cryptocurrency based on how far you've walked, beats WhatsApp as most popular in App store
A free app that rewards you for being active by paying you in its own currency has overtaken WhatsApp as the most popular app on the market.Founded in 2016, Sweatcoin has seen a dramatic increase in popularity recently with more than two million active weekly users.The 'sweatcoins' can be spent at over 300 stores, including Boohoo.com, Graze and Hellofresh.
The app tracks your movement and currently rewards every 1,000 steps with 0.95 sweatcoins. The sweatcoins are then exchangeable for a variety of products in the store. It has already received more than £4 million ($5.7 million) in backing from a number of different investors.
Currently, the app is only available in the UK, Ireland and the US. However, the company plans to use its financial backing to expand and reach out to Europe and Asia in the near future.Anton Derlyatka, co-founder of Sweatcoin, told TechCrunch: 'We have a very bold plan to take the concept of fitness into the future which even includes the ability to pay taxes with sweatcoin.'
Oleg Foment, co-founder of Sweatcoin, also said: 'As we grow and execute upon our vision, we plan to develop an open-source blockchain DLT technology that will allow Sweatcoin to be traded like any other major crypto- or fiat currency.' The London-based app has become the fastest growing health and fitness app in history, increasing its revenue by 266 per cent in the last quarter.
The app overtook Facebook-owned WhatsApp to become the number one ranked free app in the Apple app store. The developers hope that one day users will be able to pay taxes with the currency accumulated by their steps
