JERUSALEM
— Having publicly pledged a “solemn duty and moral imperative” to protect Israel, Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the nearby Palestinians.
“As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality,” the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who breakfasted around a U-shaped table at the luxurious King David Hotel.

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, said he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference is so great.

“And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things,” Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the “hand of providence”

The breakfast with top donors — including Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer — concluded Romney’s visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the his foreign policy credentials.

Romney’s declaration that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital was keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv. He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

Obama Signs Bill for Israel Missile Defence

US President Barack Obama will release an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to upstage Republican presidential rival Mitt Romneys trip to Israel this weekend.

The stepped-up aid, first announced in May and reiterated on Friday, will help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defence system. The system, known as Iron Dome, has proved successful at stopping rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians from close range, including from Gaza.

Obama announced the new military assistance as he signed a bill in the Oval Office expanding military and civilian co-operation with Israel.

Obama said the bill underscores the United States unshakable commitment to Israel.

The White House focus on Israel this week comes as Romney prepares to visit Jerusalem, where he will meet Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, with whom Obama has had frosty relations.

Both Romney and Obamas campaigns are eager to earn support from Jewish voters in the United States.

The presumptive Republican nominee, who will face Obama in November elections, has said Obama is not supportive enough of Israel, and he has promised to ramp up US aid. Obama officials say the administration already provides record levels of funding.

During the signing, Obama was flanked by Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Howard Berman, the bills sponsors, and several prominent Jewish leaders, including Lee Rosenberg, chairman of AIPAC, the leading pro-Israel lobby, and Richard Stone, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Obama received 78 per cent of the Jewish vote in the 2008 election, but a nationwide Gallup poll in June showed him down to 64 per cent backing versus Romneys 29 per cent.

Obama angered many Israelis and the countrys US supporters last year when he insisted any negotiations on the borders of a future Palestinian state begin on the basis of lines that existed before Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a 1967 war, a negotiating standard that has been held by several past administrations.

Obama visited Israel as a candidate in the 2008 campaign but has not done so as president.

Romney has accused Obama of being too hard on Israel and not tough enough with Iran.

Actually, Israel is a state of US - at least that what they show to its people - pledging to protect a state is similar to what we "We shall protect every inch of our country" - This is exactly shat a country's leadership should do ;)

My allegiance is to the US constitution. I dont see Israel mentioned in it.

These democrats and Republicans both are the same. The only folks who hint of this issue with Israel or any other country are the Libertarian party folks. You hear Ron Paul speaking against supporting Israel. Heck I have even heard him speak against Pakistan!

When Politicians speak the truth, they are taken to the drycleaners! Jesi Qoum wasa hukumraan...

Look like you are getting matured, Amir. This is just a tip of the Iceberg. But as you know, hopefully, that it is the power and the might of Dollars behind these mamanoeuvrings. Who could be more affordable to support him other than the club of Zionist's big Boys of Haliberton, Casino Owners and others ? At least one born American started to ask questions.

I got mature the day when I lost $2000 of my $3000 in my stock account. Today, I see those $2000 getting me the best education money could buy..

Look up the American Libertarian Party and its stand on Politics, Economics and Wars. You'll start to think highly of that segment of the Americans.
