Sad day for Pakistan cricket.

Shoaib will call it a day after World Cup

Shoaib Akhtar announces to retire from international cricket after the World Cup.

Making his debut against West Indies on November 29, 1997, Shoaib had been a threat for batsmen around the world. Shoaib sent 178 batsmen to pavilion in the 46 matches. He also got 247 wickets in 163 one day internationals. Shoaib was featured in 15 T20 internationals in which he picked 19 wickets.

He has taken two ten-wicket haul and 10 five-for during his test career. He managed a five-for four times in one day international cricket.

Shoaib Akhtar will retire from the international game at the end of Pakistan's World Cup, bringing to an end one of cricket's most compelling and mercurial careers. He told his Pakistan team-mates of the decision at the Premadasa Stadium on Thursday morning, during an emotional gathering in which he delivered a farewell speech and was embraced by fellow players and support staff.
Privately, over the last few months, Shoaib had been looking at the World Cup as a final hurrah for a body increasingly unable to cope with the rigours of the international game. The tournament itself has been a mixed one for him: he was outstanding through ten overs in Pakistan's win over Sri Lanka. But after an impressive opening spell against New Zealand he was taken for 28 runs in his final over, bowling a succession of waist high full tosses at Ross Taylor as New Zealand changed the game.
He was dropped for the subsequent Zimbabwe game - having earlier been rested in the game against Canada - and it was as much for his performance as continuing concerns over his ability to be at optimum operation in his second and third spells.
Shoaib made his first international appearance in December 1997, against West Indies. He shot to fame in 1999, when he bowled Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in 1999 in the Asian Test Championship game against India, and continued that form into the World Cup where he was one of Pakistan's most effective bowlers.
But since then, issues pertaining to his action, discipline and injuries severely curtailed his career. In a little more than 13 years in international cricket, Shoaib managed just 46 Tests, but performed impressively, picking up 178 wickets at 25.69. He was a more regular feature in ODIs as Pakistan's spearhead, and picked up 247 wickets at 24.97.

Shoaib Akhtar to quit after World Cup

COLOMBO: Pakistans maverick paceman Shoaib Akhtar, whose colourful career has been a heady mix of on-field brilliance and off-field controversy, will quit international cricket after the World Cup.
Yes, I will quit international cricket after the World Cup the 35-year-old told AFP. I have taken this decision after much thought. Pakistans last match in this World Cup will also be my last. I hope that will be the final on April 2.
Akhtar made up his mind after Pakistans 110-run defeat against New Zealand, in which he went for 70 runs in his nine overs.
He was rested for the match against Zimbabwe on Monday and was thought to be an unlikely starter for Saturdays last Group A match against Australia.
Akhtar, who made his international debut in 1997, took 178 wickets in 46 Tests, the last of which was against India at Bangalore in 2007. He is three wickets short of 250 in 163 one-day internationals and has taken 19 wickets in 15 Twenty20 internationals.
Pakistan squad members hugged him in the dressing room on Thursday before captain Shahid Afridi embraced him as the players entered the R. Premadasa stadium for practice.
Akhtar, known as the Rawalpindi Express during his tearaway days as one of Test crickets most feared if unpredictable talents, once cracked the 100mph barrier at the 2003 World Cup.
At this World Cup, which was always likely to be his swansong, Akhtar looked neat and tidy with figures of 0-10 and 2-42 against Kenya and Sri Lanka respectively.
He missed the win over Canada and was smashed all over the park at Pallekele against New Zealand, with figures of 1-70, before being dropped for the game with Zimbabwe.
But his career will always be remembered for a series of fitness problems, discipline violations as well as a doping offence that put the brakes on his achieving his true potential.
Akhtar and the now banned Mohammad Asif failed drugs tests in 2006 and were suspended for two years and one year respectively, both of which were lifted on appeal.
Fitness problems forced him to miss the 2007 World Cup while he was fined heavily and banned for 13 ODIs, after he hit Asif with a bat, two days before the 2007 World Twenty20 in South Africa.

Its a sad day for the cricket world. He could have done much more for Pakistan but stupid PCB ruined his career. He had discipline issues but surely he was a patriotic Pakistani and his name never came up regarding the corruption in cricket.
After his departure, cricket world would not be left with any real genuine fast bowlers. Too much cricket is destroying the careers of fast bowlers.
I agree with him when he said that he does not see his breed of fast bowlers emerging soon in cricket world. Thanks a lot Shoaib for playing for Pakistan and letting us win so many games single handedly. May Allah bless you.

DHAKA:

Responding to former captain Imran Khans advice on including fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar for the semi-final against India, a team official has stated that the maverick paceman has lost interest in the sport after announcing his retirement.
Khan, who was the captain when Pakistan clinched their lone World Cup in 1992, had said that Akhtar was the best man to lead the attack against the arch-rivals in Mohali on March 30.

He has lost interest after he announced his retirement, the official told The Express Tribune. He barely takes part in the teams training sessions and if Khan knew his situation, he would not have given such an advice.

Akhtar, who has sat out four of seven matches, announced his retirement after the match against New Zealand where the bowler was plundered for 28 by Ross Taylor off what was his last over in the innings. His replacement, Wahab Riaz, has not impressed either but has been labelled much better by the official.
Riaz is a much better player currently. Akhtars lack of interest does not qualify him for the semi-final against India.

Akhtar has had a rather poor tournament with regards to wickets where, after claiming two key wickets against Sri Lanka, the fast-bowler has been fined on multiple occasions by the team management for indiscipline. The match against New Zealand could well be his last international game where Kamran Akmal missed two chances off his bowling.
