KARACHI: No attacking terrorists escaped from Pakistan Navy’s Mehran base after storming the defence facility that left more than $40 million worth of two PC3-Orion surveillance and anti-submarine aircrafts destroyed on Sunday’s night, officials privy to the situation told Daily Times on condition of anonymity.
They claimed that the conflicting figures issued by some political personalities were devoid of any real facts. “No one had escaped from the PNS Mehran base and all four attackers were killed during the operation,” the sources asserted. There were reports by some political leaders that two attackers escaped from PNS Mehran base after conducting the attack but it was not the case at all, the sources added.
Outside the PNS Mehran base, there was a wide area with unauthorised and encroached housing of many residents and after the attack on the defence base, the security personnel swiped the area, the official informed.
The officials further said there were some evidences of footprints there that suggest maybe one or two facilitators of terrorists remained outside the base and never entered the defence facility due to the three-layered strict security cordon enforced by the security forces immediately after the attack. A long-range wireless set had been recovered from the base and it is a possibility that one of the terrorists were in contact with someone outside the base, the sources speculated.
“It was almost impossible to flee from a naval base under such strict security,” one source said, adding, “The security personnel within a short time located the attackers and restricted them to a localised area within the proximity of PNS Mehran base.” Navy commandos reached the base immediately after the armed attack and Lieutenant Yasir Abbas led the retaliatory operation and was martyred during the process, the source confirmed what has been already known.
After the first assault, the terrorists were completely restrained from carrying out further attacks on the naval facility, the sources said. The officials further claimed that the security forces battled the terrorists fearlessly and cleared the naval base.
The sources said that some bullets of Indian origin were found from the terrorist possession and they had night vision goggles too. Experts were still searching for clues and articles from the base used by the terrorists, they added.
Except the bullets, entire weaponry used and recovered from terrorists’ possession was often used by elite forces in Central Asian Republics and the Russian Federation, one official disclosed.
There were 17 foreigners at the naval facility at the time, including 11 Chinese and six US citizens, who were provided strict security, remained safe and evacuated safely from the base, the officials added. The officials said that the investigators would eventually uncover the identities of militants involved in the assault at PNS Mehran.
The inquiry committee, headed by Rear Admiral Tehsinullah Khan, has been investigating the terrorist attack. Representatives from Pakistan Air Force, police, naval intelligence and Rangers are also part of the investigation.
