PESHAWAR: Hundreds of people watched a man executed at gunpoint in a militant stronghold in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday after a Taliban court found him guilty of killing two brothers, residents and officials said.
The Taliban brought the man, blindfolded and with his hands tied by rope, into a football ground in Miramshah, the main town of the North Waziristan region near the Afghan border.

The execution highlighted the power the Taliban still wield in the region.

The Pakistan army mounted several offensives in the volatile northwest over the past year, killing hundreds of militants and capturing several of their strongholds, but it has not yet launched a crackdown in North Waziristan.

A Taliban court had earlier convicted the man over the killing the two brothers about two weeks ago. The court asked the family of the slain brothers to take their revenge under Islamic law.

The heirs fired five gunshots and killed the suspect on the spot, a resident told Reuters by telephone.

The Taliban later handed over the man's body to his relatives, an official in Miranshah said.

Pakistan's northwestern ethnic Pashtun tribal lands along the Afghan border have never been under the full control of any government and have been militant hubs for decades.

Pakistan's military says it is overstretched and does not have enough resources to open another front when it has yet to consolidate its successes elsewhere. Reuters

Let me tell you what kind of results these punishments bring about ...

Crime rate ... almost non-existent. Punishment won't bring the dead back to living but the purpose is two-fold. One is to soothe the aggrieved and the other is to set an example ... only that can halt crimes in Pakistan.

Just a couple of months ago, a wadera of South Punjab let his dogs loose on an elderly woman just because she made a fuss when chamchas of that wadera looted her Oranges' crop ... don't you think that wadera should be cast before dogs too in the same manner ? Now convince me if punishing such an animal in such a way is barbarity ... I would say it would be justice.

So you yourself claim that what he did was barbaric. If you do the same onto him, what is the difference between him and you ? What you are supporting leads to anarchy, where everyone creates their own rule of law. If you are agitated by the lack of justice in Pakistan, come out on the street and let the government know. I am sure the government knows, but peaceful street protests give hope to others that people still care about Pakistan. If you can't do that, then dont look for a band aid fix to the justice issue. It wont solve our problems.

dear me, his act was barbaric ... but if he is punished in the same way is not barbarity ... one is called crime and the other is called justice.

When you see someone doing such an act claiming to be above the law ... it will deaden the hearts of the onlookers ... but when same act is being done in justice it will strengthen the hearts and vest in them a hope and sense of protection. That is a HUGE difference .....

More, for instance, if a doctor is amputating an organ to protect rest of the body that is called treatment ... but when same is done by some one brutally ... that is called a crime. Hope you ponder over it and try to understand the difference ... this is not a math equation. Because these could be equal acts mathematically ... but socially they both stand for their own separate visions. Barbarity stands for LAWLESSNESS ... Punishment stands for JUSTICE.

The idea of meek and discreet laws that you are promoting here ... are well practiced by European and other western nations. And we all know the kind of crime rates they have ...

Rest of your post is pure sermon ... get out on street ... it will make us feel better ... that somebody cares ... and blah blah blah. Our, mine and your and every body else's coming to this forum proves enough that we care ... that we wanna talk about, discuss and come out with solutions ... make up our minds about certain things ... what more proof do you want ?

Sorry for the back-to-back post ... but let me tell you something that you obviously don't know.

Since the era of Hadrat Quaid e Azam ... these tribals have been permitted to live their lives according to their own customs and their own self-explanatory sense of things like religion, politics and society. I have been to Miramshah ... even to the last village on Durand Line that is called Dargai ... and I have seen tribals selling bullets on barrows ... they sell it by weighing them against a water-melon. When Coke was being sold for Rs. 7 in Pakistani cities ... in Miramshah Coke was being sold for Rs. 4 ... an arm long glass of milk-shake for only Rs. 10. Food was so cheap that you will only have to buy curry ... and bread is free ... as much you can eat. Order a plate of meat curry ... and all the samples of the dishes cooked that day in hotel will be presented along with the main order ............ Does that tell you anything ?

Surely no ... So I will elaborate. One can say they have been defying our rules so severely that they won't even use a Pakistani government's set scale to weigh a kilo and measure it against a water-melon instead which is definitely a lot heavier than a kilo ... that is not the case.

In the event of partition we have had a solemn, silent and understood kind of pact with these people ... that they will not be meddled with. They won't pay taxes, hence the price difference in every food item sold there as compared to in rural areas. Both sides kept their bargain ...

They have every right to tell us to go f*ck ourselves and separate from Pakistan and keep practicing their rituals ... after all, what have we done for them? We have had them abandoned for 62+ years ... even Baluchis are yelling for their rights but these tribals ... have they ever asked for anything of us ? Not even a single official building was situated in Miramshah ... our patrolling rangers were also barracked by these tribals ... infact, they have been treating our rangers as their guests. We never tried to educate them ... so we have no right to complain if their understanding of certain things is misplaced. We never provided them with treatment facilities ... so no wonder if they have such strong stomachs. We never even once cared for them ... except that whenever there was a threat to Pakistan ... these tribals were always the first to announce their integrity with our armed forces. They have done an excellent job for guarding our borderline against Russians and Indians ...

But now suddenly we are feeling a lot of threats just because they are punishing their culprits they have been punishing for 62+ years ... and we very reverently claim that their understanding of justice is malformed or barbaric ... the thing is ... if it is barbaric ... I repeat ... IF ... it is barbaric ... what have we done to reduce this barbarity all these 63 long years ? Was not it our governments' duty to educate its subjects and encourage them to be more civilized ?

If we have not done our duty ... we MUST not criticize now ... we don't have the right.

There are two points you can gather from this news. The Public execution took place and It is most unfortunate that it had to happen. I am against this kind of Justice only because an innocent could also become a victim of such justice.I definately blame the incompetence of this Government that such Public exucutions do happen since our Justice system is unable to deliver.

Some very key points have emerged in this debate, firstly these acts are violent and no one has given Taliban the mandate to dispense justice so please refrain from justifying this act. Yes the laws are weak and justice is delayed but if we starting taking law in our own hands the end result will be chaos.
Greywolf is right when he talks about the social injustices by the state in FATA we are responsible for their under development but now the state is working to implement broad based reforms in FATA.
These men were executed by The Hafiz Gul Bahdur group who is considered to be a strategic asset, even if they publically execute our citizens. The failure to initiate an operation in North Waziristan will further add the miseries of locals.

Well, You should re-consider the part I have highlighted in your post ... reconsider it ... research it and then come to a conclusion. Make up your own mind. And PLEASE don't mix up tribals and Talibans ... they are eons apart.

@ Greywolf! I understand that Taliban and tribal’s are not the same and the Taliban are not a reflection of the tribal’s. However justice remains a subject of the government and it’s the duty of the state, it is tragic that the Hafiz Gul Bahdur group is being allowed to kill cold bloodedly murder people and then call it justice. An operation against miscreants in North Waziristan is inevitable either sooner or later.

First it should be remembered that neither all tribal people are Taliban nor they support Taliban. There are some who do that......
NOW
My Dear! With all due respect please don't pretend that after a few visits to these areas you became an expert on this subject. I grew up in the area a little more modern and social than that of Mirran shah but still I have seen the brutality of Taliban with my own eyes AND NO ONE,, NO ONE can justify that....
In your post you mentioned the old times but you are forgetting one thing, then it was not someone or a group who decides what to do, it was used to be a Jirga including a representative from every sect and every tribe and they used to decide what should be done,,,,, NOW its Taliban not Jirga,,,,,,,,,, and there is a big difference between both.

You are right that Pakistani government has forgotten us for more than 60 years and we have a lot of complaints about that BUT it doesn't mean that we will start supporting someone like Mulla Fazal ullah or Maulana Sufi Muhammad (Self proclaimed scholars).

I am not against the punishment of lashing or other Islamic punishments BUT who will decide??? Who will decide that a rapist should be stoned to death??? This is a big question, my Dear.
Being the resident of that area, I will never admit or allow Maulana Sufi Muhammad to become the decider because I know his level and that of Maulana Fazal ullah.

you said ''If we have not done our duty ... we MUST not criticize now ... we don't have the right''................ No you are wrong, by not criticizing or stopping it you are just repeating the history. So if you haven't done something in the past, you need to DO IT NOW. Thanks
-Peace
