GUJRANWALA: An elderly man queued up in Peoples Colony Ramazan Bazaar here on Wednesday to purchase subsidised flour died apparently owing to heat and exhaustion while two women also fainted.

Muhammad Rifaqat, 55, wanted buying a 10kg flour bag. He first went to a truck sale point in Satellite Town, but that had been closed down by the authorities. Then he went to Peoples Colony Ramazan Bazaar where he had to queue for hours.

In the meantime, he fell unconscious owing to heat and suffocation and was shifted to DHQ Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The district administration was providing sufficient number of flour bags at Ramazan bazaars but the supply reduced sharply after a few days.

Divisional Commissioner Hasham Tareen and other officers reached the hospital and told Rifaqats family that he had died owing to cardiac arrest.

Two women, Sehrish and Zarina Bibi, of Nowshera Road, also fell unconscious owing to heat and exhaustion at the Ramazan bazaar. They were taken to a private hospital for treatment.

The district administration had abolished 42 truck points in the district a few days ago and all the 17 Ramazan bazaars became overburdened to cater to a large number of customers.
