Karachi
Unfamiliar with the city and holed up on its outskirts after their escape from Waziristan, the Taliban would not be so successful in targeting the law enforcement agencies if it were not for its collaboration with the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), the outfit that carries out the attacks, a police official told The News on Friday.
“The man whose names regularly surfaces after each attack on the law enforcers in the city is Naeem Bokhari, the LeJ’s second-in-command,” said Crime Investigation Department SSP Operations Fayyaz Khan.
The police official was speaking about the investigation into the suicide blast at the Sachal Rangers headquarters in North Nazimabad on Thursday that killed three soldiers of the paramilitary force and injured 22 others including civilians.
“Looking at the history of the attacks on law enforcement officials, we are 90 percent sure that the LeJ Naeem Bokhari group is involved in the suicide attack at the Rangers headquarters.”
Bokhari was born and raised in the city. A resident of Nazimabad, he went on to climb the ranks of the banned organisation. The son of a Pesh Imam in Paposh Nagar, Bokhari fluently speaks Pashto.
“The Taliban know little about the city, but Naeem Bokhari is a native and also well-connected. The LeJ activists we have arrested so far have revealed that Bokhari assigned them their tasks,” the police official said.
DNA testing
The remains of the suicide bomber found at the Rangers headquarters in North Nazimabad have been sent to the laboratory for DNA testing.
Special Investigation Unit SP Khurram Waris told The News that the body parts of the suicide bomber were found near the tree where the explosives-laden truck had struck.
The police official said the sketch of the suicide bomber had also been prepared with the help of witnesses’ accounts.
“The National Database and Registration Authority record of the bomber is also being searched for. This is the basic information that we have. Though we do know who’s behind the attack, it is still too early to disclose that.”
DIG West Javed Odho said the registration number of the truck used in attack as well as the chassis number reported earlier by the media was “fake”.
Sources told The News that the Rangers had recently carried out an operation against banned militant outfits in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and the areas on the outskirts of the city, compelling the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan to strike back.
The Sachal Rangers headquarters has an investigation office as well as a residential complex within its premises.
Joint investigation reports as well as the records of search and other operations against militants and target killers are also kept in the building. The CCTV footage of the attack showed a truck emerging from a shanty neighbourhood located near the headquarters and exploding within a minute.
The shanty neighbourhood caught fire due to the explosion and its residents were evacuated.
A day after the attack, the area surrounding the headquarters was cordoned off and the residents whose homes were destroyed by the explosion were asked to “keep out” for a few days.
The blast had also damaged three pole-mounted transformers and various sub-stations in the area, causing a major power breakdown.
A neighbourhood in Nazimabad Block B was still without power on Friday as Karachi Electric Supply Corporation workers were trying to restore its electricity supply. Though KESC officials claimed that the power supply had been restored, the residents said some areas near the Rangers headquarters were still without electricity.
