You are right about Canadian population but it is big in the sense it is all connected to the outside world down to about all regions and communities . Taiwan on the other hand perhaps has one mega-city which is so much integrated to outside world.

Australia has so far done pretty well as it has gone out aggressive on testing by doing 300,000 tests for a population of 27 million which is >1% of population and infection growth rate has slipped under single digit % after being at 30% daily growth rate.

Canada has disadvantage of being close to US with a lot of traffic between these countries e.g., snow birds etc.,
