ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Javed Hashmi’s latest disclosure, being seen as another drone attack on Imran Khan, has confirmed every key element of the anti-democracy plot that was being discussed overtly or covertly everywhere even before the start of the present sit-ins.
Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri were so confident about the success of the conspiracy that they had separately declared, even before launching their long marches that the Nawaz Sharif government would vanish before the end of August.
Hashmi’s disclosures, which went un-responded by PTI, are credible and convincing as they come from an insider, who was part and parcel of the main consultations within the party.A fundamental part of the plan was to have a technocrats’ government, an old idea being bandied about by different quarters but it has always been rejected.
It was this very proposal that was, as usual, unexpectedly presented by Imran Khan that irked Hashmi, forcing him to abandon the PTI’s protest and proceed to Multan. However, he changed his mind only after he was assured that Imran Khan would retract the idea. The PTI chief did that but replaced it with another innovation - a government of non-political figures.
PTI circles often perceived the Supreme Court as an institution that would help them implement their scheme although it is unthinkable that the apex court would ever be part of such conspiracy in the presence of highly respected Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk. But the PTI was sure for unexplained reasons.
“The chief justice was to take over the government for three months to form the technocrats’ government and the army was supposed to ask the judges to do the job,” Hashmi said quoting part of the sordid plan.
Whatever the PTI had in mind and regardless of the prompting it received from any quarters, the Pakistan Army has already declared that it has nothing to do with politics and disapproved mention of any ‘script’ or its author.
Even before Hashmi fired his first and second drone, stressing that the civil disobedience call given by Imran Khan was never approved by the PTI core committee, it was widely believed that the PTI chief did not consult any of his party leaders and made the announcement out of the blue.
Similarly, it was also abundantly clear that the core committee had not sanctioned storming of the Prime Minister’s House, the Presidency or the Parliament building, but Imran Khan asked his ‘tigers’ to be on the front during the attack and urged his ‘tigresses’ to be at the tail. This was what proved to be the proverbial last straw that broke the camel’s back as far as Hashmi was concerned.
From the onset of the present protest, knowledgeable persons knew that PTI leaders including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jehangir Tareen and Saifullah Niazi were the main go-betweens to implement the plot. Hashmi has unambiguously confirmed it.“The three used to go to Aabpara to buy ‘vegetables’ from ‘them’ (and would come with new ideas to intensify the protest),” he has stated.
Hashmi has also discussed the role of lone ranger from Rawalpindi, Sheikh Rashid, who was already being publicly viewed with immense suspicion by all and sundry, as he has always presented himself as the key operator of the plot. “Rashid is a unique character in politics. Sometimes he poses as a self-styled spokesman for the army for his personal agenda. He is trying to engineer a clash between Parliament and the establishment to protect his vested interests.”
It has often been pointed out that for lacking experience in the political field and the absence of prudently acting in such situations, Imran Khan has pushed himself to a point of no return by taking the extreme line - not to end the sit-in unless Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif steps down. Summing it up, Hashmi said there was no logical end to the sit-in and that the ‘oppressors’ have not left any option open for his comeback. “Qureshi and Tareen have closed all his doors for return to Imran Khan.”
The PTI chief was required to increase his demands gradually instead of starting from the extreme. Nawaz Sahrif’s resignation demand was not included in his original agenda, and it suddenly sprang up when he began the protest.
Hashmi has also endorsed the commonly debated ambitions of a set of retired generals to get a substantial share of the cake, which they don’t deserve, by derailing the democratic dispensation. Some of them continuously appear in TV talks shows as ‘independent analysts’ and view not a single step of the Nawaz Sharif government as positive. “Retired army generals are hatching a conspiracy to get the government and bring a technocrats’ setup through the Supreme Court intervention,” Hashmi said.
