It was a fake curve. I'll tell you why, most countries at war suppressed journalists and barred them from reporting on deaths so much so that obituary sections were completely banned to protect the moral of their troops and people. That included US. It's called Spanish flu because only Spain reported true numbers and that's because it remained neutral

SPANISH FLU was before the invention and popularity of air travel
back then, infected travel by sea and by the time they arrived at destination sea port, their symptoms were already visible hence either the infected recovered close to sea at land or died right there

In order to not get the ports shut down due to infection, countries hid information and wiped out evidence, sometimes using harsh measures against arriving ships carrying the sick. This included denying them medical treatment or lodging in guesthouses/hotels and hiding away the sick and dead to curb rumours.

Read the data and estimates of death toll of Spanish flu and see its extent over 3 continents - than to make a statement which means god knows what.
