UN says Israel committed war crimes in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS: Israel targeted "the people of Gaza as a whole" in the three-week military operation, which is estimated to have killed more than 1,300 Palestinians at the beginning of this year, according to a UN-commissioned report published yesterday.

A UN fact-finding mission led by the South African judge Richard Goldstone said Israel should face prosecution by the International Criminal Court unless it opened independent investigations of what the report said were repeated violations of international law, "possible war crimes and crimes against humanity" during the operation.

Using by far the strongest language of any of the numerous reports criticising Operation Cast Lead, the UN mission, which interviewed victims, witnesses and others in Gaza and Geneva this summer, says that, while Israel had portrayed the war as self-defence in response to Hamas rocket attacks, it "considers the plan to have been directed, at least in part, at a different target: the people of Gaza as a whole.

"In this respect the operations were in furtherance of an overall policy aimed at punishing the Gaza population for its resilience and for its apparent support for Hamas, and possibly with the intent of forcing a change in such support," the report said.

The 575-page document presented to yesterday's session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva was swiftly denounced by Israel. The foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the UN mission had "dealt a huge blow to governments seeking to defend their citizens from terror", and that its conclusions were "so disconnected with realities on the ground that one cannot but wonder on which planet was the Gaza Strip they visited".

The Gaza war began on 27 December 2008 and ended on 18 January 2009.

The UN report found that the statements of military and political leaders in Israel before and during the operation indicated that they intended the use of "disproportionate force", aimed not only at the enemy but also at the "supporting infrastructure". The mission adds, "In practice this appears to have meant the civilian population."

The mission also had harsh conclusions about Hamas and other armed groups, acknowledging that rocket and mortar attacks have caused terror in southern Israel, and saying that, where such attacks were launched into civilians areas, they would "constitute war crimes" and "may amount to crimes against humanity".

It also condemned the extrajudicial killings, detention and ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees by the Hamas regime in Gaza as well as by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and called for the release on humanitarian grounds of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli corporal abducted by Gaza militants in June 2006.

In Defense of Israel -

1. Hamas started this war, NOT Israel. The responsibility and blame rests on Hamas's shoulders, not Israel's.

2. Hamas took "Panga" with a country that is 100 times stronger than them.

3. Hamas terrorised the civilian population of Southern Israel by continuously launching unguided rockets, specifically targeting civilians.

4. Hamas used civilian areas to launch rockets inside Israel. Even schools and UN compound was used to launch rockets.
Knowing fully well that Israel might retaliate and target those areas. They deliberately put the lives of their own people in danger.

5. Hamas doesn't care about the life and safety of its own people and here we are accusing Israel for protecting its citizens!!! This is Hypocrisy. Hamas wanted civilians to die, so that it could get media coverage and strengthen its case in front of the international community.

6. Hamas targeted its political rivals and alleged "informers". Many were tortured and killed.

--You can defend "Terrorists Israelis" as much as you'd want but reality won't budge 8-) that being they have Occupied Palestinian lands and homes and these Israelis will live in fear till they breathe their last :ugeek: .No matter what weapons they gain, they will feel hands tied behind their backs every single time they make any move :ugeek: ,.they would have to pay for their Illegal Occupation of Palestine and they will be humiliated everywhere..

--Hamas has all the Right in the World to defend their Territory and they won't be scared by the failed scared tactics used by Terrorist Israel,,Israelis keep breaking all the International laws by extending their Illegal Settlements and give a deaf ear to the world

--They are simply delaying the Inevitable :ugeek: they'll keep paying for their crimes every single day by living in fear :)

Wow I am not surprised, here's the reply CONTRACEPTIVE

1) No you are wrong Hamas didn't start the war you need to ger facts rights after years of blockade people started dying of hunger and disease that's when hamas made 'threats' that they have no choice but to attack blockades, which is justified anyone will do it for the sake of themselves and families.

2) ISRAEL has occupied their land, destroyed their houses, raped and killed women and kids what do you expect they will sit and just let them do, withtheir limited resources they try their best, how arrogant and ignorant you are it's just pathetic when you made your #2 comment.

3) Terrorised the civilian population of suthern Israel by firing rockets by that you mean home made rockets that use to fall down half way in the middle of no where, there were 13 Israeli deaths and 10 of them were soilders 3 military civilian deaths, do some research and than say stuff, these stats clearly prove you wrong, Israel needed a reason to attack like US needed 9/11 to attack and Israelis did splendid job in doing propaganda.

4) Yes, civilian areas were used by tell me where are the military bases in Gaza, what the total area and what weapons have they got, just ak-47 and some launchers, Israel can never stand a military base or areas there so if they launch it from the road they don't have a choice, it's so stupid of you to say that, so dumb.

5) If hamas didn't care about their people they wouldn't have fought to defend them and would have just let everyone die, they wouldn't have bothered about their people's suffering.

6) What do you do with traitors, kill them or hug them.
