July 22, 2011 | 5:11 p.m.[/h][h=4][/h]Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf lashed out at India, accusing New Delhi of mounting a concerted push to drum up anti-Pakistani feelings within the United States, turn Afghanistan into a pro-Indian proxy, and ensure that Pakistan remains permanently weaker than its larger neighbor.
“They want total dominance,” Musharraf told reporters at an Atlantic Media luncheon on Friday. “India would like to have a subservient Pakistan, politically and economically subservient.”
During his years as Pakistan’s paramount leader, Musharraf worked to lower tensions with India, which has fought a series of bloody wars with Pakistan since the two states were created almost 65 years ago. Musharraf held extensive talks with India over the disputed region of Kashmir, and U.S. officials believe the two sides were at times close to a deal.
Before stepping down in 2008, Musharraf also paid several visits to India, rare—and unpopular—moves for a Pakistani leader.
On Friday, by contrast, Musharraf took a strikingly hard-line position on India, which he identified as the primary cause of Pakistan’s security threats and diplomatic problems. Musharraf said India was expanding its navy so it could control the Indian Ocean and said New Delhi was funneling money and aid into Afghanistan so the country would be a reliably proxy in an ongoing shadow war with Pakistan.
Musharraf also blamed India for Pakistan’s troubled relationship with Washington, which has spiraled to a historical low in the months since U.S. Navy SEALs mounted a unilateral raid into Pakistan to kill al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
“India certainly is trying to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan,” he said. “Sometimes I have a nagging suspicion that they are even trying to create an anti-Pakistan U.S.”
Musharraf was harshly critical of the Obama administration, which he accused of having an overt pro-Indian bias. He faulted Obama for visiting India and using the trip to publicly criticize Pakistan, a move that Musharraf said had gone over very badly inside Pakistan, a country which Obama has yet to visit. He also criticized the White House for failing to make any serious efforts to bridge the Pakistani-Indian divide over Kashmir.
“The U.S. is pro-India entirely,” Musharraf said. “No U.S. official utters a word about the Kashmir dispute. At least talk about it, even if you don’t do anything.”
Musharraf said India’s size and wealth gave it undue influence within the United States, including over the American press.
“I think the media is dominated quite a lot by Indians,” he said, drawing laughter from the assembled reporters. Musharraf later said he had misspoke and meant that India had “influence” over the American media.
“There’s no justice in this world,” Musharraf said. “There is hypocrisy in this world. Unfortunately, might is right. And India is bigger and richer.”
