The main problem is not only with ruling elite but priestly elite as well. They are the ones who brought about changes in purpose and concepts of revelation and turned deen= divine ruling system into mazhab= religious creeds casing divisions in their people thereby making them weaklings.
This is real story of bani israel if one studies it carefully. Religious people will die but will not give up religion in favour of deen. Deen is the problem for ruling elite and that is why they employed mullas to push it out of their way. This is why the quran was deliberately mistranslated and misinterpreted to push the agenda of ruling classes. DEEN is anti imperialism whereas religion is for imperialism. DEEN is actual moral ruling system not system of make beleifs. The while we push for religion as divine ruling system we are deceiving ourselves and this is what needs to be realised before we can find our way again.
Not many people realise this and this is why those who pointed out this fact were isolated in islamic histroy or were gotten rid of. This is what the fight was about between prophets and the kings of their times. One party pushed for same rule for benefit of all and the other pushed for different rules for different people. These people made rules that suited them at the expense of all others.
