The Pakistani public is furiousthe outrage is palpable. The resignation of General Pasha indicates the publics anger about the military and ISI because of their failure to know about the raid by US Navy Seal strike team. As he heads to Washington his replacement is getting ready to take charge of the worlds most potent and powerful spy agency.
Lieutenant-General Ahmad Shuja Pasha was chosen to lead the ISI in 2008 because he was seen a a liberal man who believed in the eradication of religious extremists in FATA and other areas of Pakistan. In 2008 the decision to replace Lieutenant-General Nadeem Taj with General Pasha came after intense US pressure. In October 2008, Gen. Taj was moved out of the ISI but rewarded with charge of a prestigious Corps the Lahore-based 11 Infantry Division, and also the commandant of the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul. Gen. General Taj found himself in trouble with the American when in 2008, President George W. Bush was reported to have complained that it had become impossible to share intelligence on the al-Qaeda and the Taliban with Pakistan because it goes straight back to the militants.
Pasha is said to have planned the Pakistani militarys two big offensives in the Swat valley in the North West Frontier Province and in South Waziristan on the Afghan borderboth offensives which Taj had resisted.
General Pasha joined the army in 1974, he served in virtually all of Pakistans security spots, Quetta Sialkot across Indian Kashmir, Waziristan, and the Swat valley. The three-star general speaks fluent German. Pasha tried to revamp its international image.
At the time of General Pashas appointment the head of the agencys domestic activities, Gen. Nusrat Naeem, and the chief of special operations, Gen. Asif Akhtar, were replaced and not promoted. Gen. Taj was in line to succeed General Kayani if he had not been given an extension. General Tajs promotion would have encountered intense resistance from the United States.
Initially the US simply wanted the ISI destroyed by placing it under the Interior Ministry where it would be reduced to police functions and impotent as the Meter maids. The army resisted this and the ISI was able to keep its independence even after PM Gilani announced the move in an obviously obsequious move to appease the Americans.
The ISI is hated but respected by its enemies. It is the but of much criticism in the West media which is replicated in the Bharati (aka Indian) media ad nauseum. The ISI is the favorite whipping boy of the Neocons and the Neolibs. Pakistan is the international scapegoat. Defeated generals in Afghanistan point fingers at Pakistan and its competent ISI.
The Daily Beast, an online sister publication of Newsweek magazine, reported that the head of Pakistan`s intelligence service may step down, as the government looks for a fall guy for the Bin Laden debaclewas only a matter of time.
It is ironic that Pasha is the first victim of the US raid in Abbottabad. Pakistani news outlets are speculating that General Pasha, one of the most powerful figures in Pakistan, is going to fall on the proverbial sword and resign as a consequence of the Bin Laden operation. This is not the first ISI head that had to be the fall guy. General Hamid GUl was fired by Benazir Bhuttothat however was under US pressure. Pashas resignation is a result of the demand of the Pakistani people. Our site had demanded the resignation too. We were not alone. A pantheon of other popular sites had demanded that General Kayani and General Pasha leave the scene. It is to bee soon who will replace General Pasha. Will it a pro-American subservient General or will it is a defiant nationalist.
The current mood of the nation would not allow a man of questionable integrity.
