NEW YORK (Web Desk) – A reliable source has revealed the inside story behind Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s move to shorten his US visit. According to the source, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Shahbaz Sharif held a secret meeting with Army Chief General Raheel Sharif. Besides the discussion of other pivotal matters, the meeting reflected on the appointment of next Army Chief.
General Raheel Sharif has expressed wish to appoint Lieutenant General Qamar Bajwa as next Army Chief whereas the government has nominated Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat. The government is also focusing on a technical point that Chief of Army Staff can also be appointed from the Navy or Airforce which will improve the morale of other forces.
Sources have also stated that Saudi Arabia has offered General Raheel Sharif to become the Commander-in-Chief of forces made on the alliance of 33 countries.
The deadline to the offer is November 24. This offer is a source of threat for the government of Pakistan and this is the reason that has forced PM Nawaz to shorten his US visit. Sources have reported that the new Army Chief will be appointed immediately after the return of PM Nawaz to Pakistan. CM Punjab and General Raheel Sharif openly discussed about the new Army Chief. Reportedly, Shahbaz Sharif has also offered General Raheel Sharif to extend his term however; sources have not confirmed Raheel Sharif’s answer to the offer. Political analysts suggest that the government is not in a position to appoint a new Army Chief without the consent of General Raheel Sharif. The final decision will be made in a confidential meeting after PM Nawaz’s return that the government and military establishment has jointly appointed Lieutenant General Qamar Bajwa as new Army Chief.
