Debunking theory of Punjabis showing Gandasas to immigrants after partition

The theory is usually propagated by Sindhi nationalists from PPP, JSQM and other groups who have been saying that Muhajirs were 'Bhooke Nunge' when they arrived after partition. As per them when Muslim immigrants would arrive in Punjab then local Punjabis would resist their arrival and confront them with Gundasas in their hands saying "Pakistan aggey ae (Pakistan is ahead)" directing them to enter Sindh.

Sadly, apart from them such nonsense has been spread and/or accepted by many Muhajirs as well especially those who blindly believe in propaganda by Altaf. They end up hating Punjab/Punjabis not realizing the game of Sindhi nationalists and their agent or Trojan horse named Altaf Hussain. Presently Altaf acts like some comrade or broker of Maha Sindhu Desh and ended up calling Muhajirs 'Tapke hue'

So according to both Sindhi nationalists and Altaf , "racist and mean Punjabis" would turn their back on Muhajirs, harassing and directing them towards Sindh. And in "Sindh Dharti Maa" Muhajirs would find asylum and love.

Let's analyse the theory of Gundasas shown by Punjabis.

Here are some figures about population of Muslims in present day India

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_India#Population_by_states

Total population
Regions with significant populations
c.195 million[1] (14.9%) (2019)
Uttar Pradesh38,400,000[2][3][4]
West Bengal24,600,000[2][3][4]
Bihar17,500,000[2][3][4]
Maharashtra12,900,000[2][3][4]
Assam10,600,000[2][3][4]
Kerala8,800,000[2][3][4]
Jammu and Kashmir8,500,000[2][3][4]
Karnataka7,800,000[2][3][4]
Rajasthan6,200,000[2][3][4]
Gujarat5,800,000[2][3][4]

Now look at the map and notice percentage of Muslims present in each of their states.

OK let's not speak about Muslim majority area of Jammu & Kashmir which India calls it integral part. However there could be some possible/positive changes given the latest Chinese incursion in Ladakh. But we can still notice proportions from other/regular states of India right now.

What we see is that percentage of Muslims in terms of population is really low in (Indian) Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.....just 0-5%. In neighbouring states of Haryana and Rajasthan the figures are slightly better with 5-10%. Not to forget that Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were also included in Indian/East Punjab after partition before getting carved out , plus Mewati language that is spoken by Muslims living in both Haryana and Rajasthan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mewati_language

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mewat

Figures and/or proportions from areas of U.P., Bihar, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and even (West/Indian) Bengal are better than Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. This clearly indicates that demography of both Punjabs would undergo drastic changes as a result of partition. In the middle of such chaos, how come Muslims of (Pakistani) Punjab were able to show Gandasas to Muslim immigrants.

In addition, how many news articles and sources from that era speak about locals in Punjab protesting over arrival of immigrants in their towns? How is it possible that no one from among the immigrants realize that they have finally arrived in a newly created country named Pakistan while travelling all the way from Lahore till Kashmore in Sindh ? Were Gundasas being wielded at ALL railway stations throughout Punjab?

Also , kindly have a look at different stages of migration

In cities of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Multan there is still a significant population of immigrant families from not just Indian/East Punjab but also Delhi, UP and Rajasthan etc...In 2011 movie Bol , the protagonist played by Humaima Malik tells that her grandfather had migrated from Delhi after partition and got settled in Lahore. So that also points towards presence of Urdu Speaking population in Lahore as well.

Kindly look at demographics of Lahore and Multan

Look at presence of Urdu Speakers in Lahore

OK one may still doubt Wikipedia and say Bol was just a movie....but when it comes to movies, who can forget name of legendary Mohammad Ali ? He was also a Muhajir and born in Rampur,U.P. however his family would later get settled in Multan after migration.

Apart from that, let me share few of my own personal experiences.

  • One of my late Khalos, his family had originally migrated from Delhi. They do have homes in Karachi, but apart from that they are also settled in Multan and Lahore. They actually had got lands/properties allotted to them in Multan.
  • As a family friend I know this doctor who resides in Islamabad/Rawalpindi area. But basically his parents migrated from U.P./Bihar. His caste is Burni
  • Few weeks back I met this another Pakistani here in Canada who said that he's from Lahore. After few talks he would tell me that majority of his relatives live in Karachi. And later on revealed that he's not a Punjabi and his parents migrated from Bijnor. He clearly called this Gandasa story a nonsense.
Now should one still believe propagandists of Sindhi nationalism and Altaf Hussain that "Sindh Dharti" accepted Muhajirs; and Punjabi Establishment is exploiting "Heirs" of "5000 year old Sindh Dharti" and "Urdu Speaking/New" Sindhis?

It's crystal clear that 18th amendment is a deadly weapon which Nazi type Sindhi nationalists are going to use against other ethnicities/communities including Muhajirs. And stories of "Pakistan aggey ae" are manufactured to blackmail Muhajirs so they participate in fulfilling agenda of Maha Sindhu Desh where they are eventually going to end up as good as Rohingya if it God forbids does get carved out.

Buddy please read the post COMPLETELY. I am trying to debunk the theory of Gandasas.

I've never even heard this gandasa story?

Not sure about your background. However its a widely accepted theory or myth that Muhajirs especially those who migrated from any other province than East/Indian Punjab got settled in Sindh, as Punjabis refused to accept them wielding Gandasas.

We come from a pind in central punjab, if it is such a wide spread myth how come no one I know has ever heard it.

So basically you are debunking a myth that doesn't exist.

It's not famous in Punjab but widely circulated by Sindhi nationalists . Qadir Magsi was also repeating it in a 2006 episode of 50 Minute about stranded Pakistanis (Biharis) in Bangladesh. I remember that however the episode is not available anywhere right now.

Altaf Hussain also spreads this nonsense of "Sindh Dharti" and Muhajirs being "New" or "Urdu Speaking" Sindhi these days.

Qadir Magsi is not from JSQM he is leader of STP. Sindh did accept a disproportionate amount of immigrants from India compared to Punjab, majority of them went to cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Nawabsha etc. So much so that Sindhis became a minority in Karacchi. Imagine Punjabis becoming a minority in Lahore.

You forget a huge number of people also migrated to Punjab, they are almost never included in any numbers when talking about muhajirs.

And to be honest I really don't see any issue with Sindhis becoming a minority in Karachi or Punjabis becoming a minority in Lahore as long as everyone is Pakistani its all good. As Pakistanis we have the right to live and province or city in any part of Pakistan

I dont have an issue with it either but our history is littered with divide and rule politics.

I did speak about other Sindhi nationalist groups in the very first few sentences. Moreover Magsi tribe itself is Baloch in origin and got settled in Sindh within last 300 years. Same is the case with Zardari tribe who were bandits. Not to forget that Karachi used to be capital back then and Muhajirs played a major role in administrative functions of the government. Even before partition , Karachi had got population of Gujaratis, Jews, Parsis (Zoroastrians), Goans and Hindu Sindhis (industrialists/merchants)......no influence of feudals from interior/rural Sindh.

As per Liaquat-Nehru pact , properties of Hindus and Sikhs who left for India after partition were supposed to get allotted to Muslim immigrants who arrived in Pakistan. In Sindh G.M. Syed and various Sindhi (ethno) nationalists would violate the pact afterwards.

Also Sindh used to be a part of Bombay Presidency from 1847 till 1935 and Muslims from Aligarh Muslim University etc....would play an active role in helping it split away from there.

Vitamin_C

Chief Minister (5k+ posts)
It was part of Bombay for administrative purpose.

Hindus in Sindh were also Sindhis, there was no sectarian problem in Sindh. Hindus and Muslims lived together peacefully. The migration of Hindus, Jews, Parsis damaged the economy of Sindh.

In Sindh people dont differenciate between Sindhi or Baloch because they have been coexisting for centuries. Baloch and Sindhis faught together against the British when Sindh was annexed. They may have a Baloch tribe name but if you have lived there you wont be able to tell the difference if they are Sindhi or Baloch.
