Tropical Cyclone Phet Slams into Oman, Headed to Pakistan

Tropical Cyclone Phet, the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane, has slammed into Oman. The storm will soon shift its track to the east, likely targeting Karachi, Pakistan, later in the weekend.

The projected path of Phet brings it into contact with millions of lives along the northern Arabian Seacoast in the Middle East into the weekend.
Though Phet weakened Friday morning EDT with winds decreasing from 85 to 74 mph, it has maintained Category 1 hurricane status. The strongest gusts late in the morning were around 90 mph. The center of the storm at this time had moved back over the Gulf of Oman, churning less than 100 miles southeast of Muscat, Oman.
Phet slammed into Oman Thursday evening. Soon after landfall, the strength of the storm's maximum sustained winds were equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane. Phet's intensity matched a Category 4 hurricane as recently as early Thursday morning.
The interaction with land is what caused Phet to weaken early this morning, but it remains a potent storm. Damaging winds, pounding surf and torrential rain will continue to slam northeastern Oman, which typically receives only a few inches of rain per year.
Tropical Cyclone Gonu hit the Sur area hard in 2007 and is considered to be Oman's worst natural disaster.
Phet could have a very similar outcome turning the dry stream beds, called wadis, into raging torrents, while mudslides cascade down the mountainsides in northeastern Oman.
Between 4 and 8 inches of rain is expected to fall on the parched landscape of northeastern Oman, which almost all will run off. Ras al Hadd, Oman, has received nearly 6 inches of rain in 24 hours, ending early Friday morning, EDT.
The track of Phet is curving eastward Friday, taking the storm back over the warm, open waters of the northern Arabian Sea.
It is over these warm waters where Phet could regain strength. However, if winds high in the atmosphere, also known as wind shear, become too strong, then Phet may continue to weaken.
Regardless of its strength, Phet should slam into coast of Pakistan near the city of Karachi later Sunday. Whether its strength equals that of a tropical storm or hurricane, Phet will threaten southern Pakistan and northwestern India with flooding rain.
Damaging winds will become more of a concern if Phet regains strength prior to slamming into Pakistan.
Fifteen and a half million people live in the city of Karachi, part of the Indus River Delta region.

Small craft should avoid the northern Arabian Sea or remain in port, until the storm has moved inland over Pakistan/India. The storm may affect shipping out of the Gulf of Oman for up to several days.
The northwestern edge of the Gulf of Oman is connected to the Persian Gulf by the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Energy Information Administration states that 40 percent of seaborne oil passes through this strait.
Rough seas kicked up by Phet forced Petroleum Development Oman to halt oil production and exports, but no facilities have been damaged, according to Reuters. A spokesman said that the exporting facility is fine, but oil is not being loaded since ships cannot anchor at the facility due to the rough seas.
Waves near the shores of Oman, Iran and Pakistan were between 15 and 20 feet Friday.

Cyclone Phet 400 km away from Karachi

seaview_608.jpg

Pakistani Mounted Policemen patrol on horseback at the popular Seaview Beach in Karachi on June 4, 2010. Pakistan issued a danger warning on June 4 over Cyclone Phet, which may hit the coast packing winds of 120 kilometres an hour, as relief workers were on standby to evacuate residents forcibly if needed.

KARACHI: Authorities in coastal regions of Pakistan are preparing for high winds and possible flooding and destruction from an approaching tropical storm.

The National Disaster Management Authority said Saturday that 7,000 people have been moved to safety from low-lying areas close to the southern city of Karachi.

Tropical Storm Phet, downgraded from a cyclone, hit Oman on Friday, killing two people and causing heavy rains and winds.

The meteorological office says the storm is expected to make landfall in Pakistan early Sunday with winds of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. About 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) of coastline could be affected.

Cyclone Phet is heading towards Pakistan and is only 400 km away, according to a warning issued by the Cyclone Warning Center on Saturday.

The weather has already affected Pakistanis as 20 peoples have been killed due to torrential rains and winds in Baluchistan, Sindh and Punjab.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Cyclone Warning Center, the direction of the cyclone is towards the north-east, which is the location between Karachi and Pasni.

The center informed all the provincial authorities about the effects of the cyclone.

Pakistan Navy, provincial departments and other bodies were on high alert.

Also on Saturday, sever rains with gusty winds were reported in Balochistan and Punjab. Thirty people have also been injured as a result of these.

Chief Minister of Balochistan, Nawab Aslam Raisani immediately released Rs.50 million for any possible emergency which could be caused by Cyclone Phet.

Pasni, Gwadar and other coastal areas have reported having no electricity due to heavy rains. High tides have also been observed in the Jiwani waters.

Pakistan Navy has been doing search and rescue operations for the fishermen and local dwellers.

According to Pakistan Navy, there will be harsh winds and rains in Baluchistan after 36 hours.

Although the cyclone will lose its speed and energy, Sindh and Balochistan will still face severe gusty winds, high tides and rains for next three or four days.

KARACHI: The Cyclone Phet has moved past Karachi without hitting the coast and now passing along the coastal line of Thatta, Meteorological Department said Sunday.

Meanwhile, DCO Thatta Manzoor Shaikh said the Cyclone has smashed into the coastal line of Thatta and Badin where gale winds and heavy rains are battering the region.

He said Ketty Bunder has been evacuated to avert any hazardous situation. All the arrangements have been put in place to deal with any eventuality, he added.

Downpour is also visiting Hyderabad, disrupting the power supply, Met Office said. More rains are also expected in Karachi, it added.

Unity, PHET, Discipline? By "Syed Ali Raza Abidi"

The beautiful rainbow around 5pm had already told Karachi - you are safe!

KARACHI
:
Promising my children a whole 50 hours of some very heavy rain and not getting more than five, it was not wise of me to break to them that Phet had left.

They obviously started yelling and crying upon hearing the news and had the media on their side, closely emulating the emotions of the kids.

Yes, Saien Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA) seems to have pleaded to the Almighty on behalf of the poor of Karachi, as a lot was at stake for the country if the metropolis had collapsed as warned. I believe it, you may not.

The beautiful rainbow around 5pm had already told Karachi – you are safe! But not a single soul believed it as satellite imagery updates, the met office and the media kept everyone on the edge! One wonders, why, didn’t we believe in nature’s way of informing about its decision? Well…

From the borders of Sindh Balochistan and urban/rural Sindh Phet had burst with might, but had miraculously stayed away from Karachi by 20km only.

I sent out a few tweets asking Karachi to pay respect to the Saints and thank them for saving the city, a reply asked to also pay respect to Quaid-e-Azam for Unity, #PHET Discipline.

While realising that this city had shown the greatest spirit of unity and discipline in preparation for the possible disaster and the collective will to fight it as it hits, we can now understand, if Phet can scare us of losing this city, we must have faith (Phet) that this what was appreciated by those above, who saved the homes of around 10% of Pakistan’s population and about 70% of the country’s income.

If we can live and co-exist in peace and harmony no Phet can wet you to death.

Pakistani Zindabad.
