"Public Referendum" in Defence and Clifton Karachi
Member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) coordination committee and provincial minister, Raza Haroon, said that the party's referendum campaign, which was recently launched across the country to gather public sentiment regarding the Abbotabad operation, would spark a national revolution.
These views were expressed by Sindh's Information Technology Minister while addressing a Defence Residents Clifton Committee (DCRC) meeting held in Clifton on Friday. The gathering was called upon for encouraging DCRC residents to fill the referendum form, which consists of 17 questions.
Members of the MQM Rabita Committee along with party workers, publicly handed out copies of the form at Two Talwar in Clifton, urging citizens to answer its questions, as the US operation on May 2 was a national issue; especially since Pakistan's integrity was at stake.
Haroon expressed that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain was Pakistan's most courageous political leader, because through this referendum he was mobilising support from the masses against the incident in Abbotabad.
Commenting on US operations in the country's northern areas, he said that drone attacks must be stopped, which he claims is not possible through protests, adding that Pakistan's borders should be protected at all costs.
"Let me be very clear that MQM will never compromise the solidarity and integrity of the country," he said firmly.
Referring to major international terrorist attacks such as 9/11, London's July 2007 bombings as well as the Mumbai attacks in November 2008, he highlighted the fact that unlike Pakistan, the public in these respective countries did not demand the resignation of their rulers.
He criticised certain religious and political leaders in the country, who he felt took to the streets in protest following May 2 for their own vested interests. By accusing the leadership, these groups were weakening the foundations of the country, said Raza.
